Lessons in Agile Management: On the Road to Kanban, by David J. Anderson

David J. Anderson describes this collection as "The Missing Link in the Evolution of Kanban." Anderson developed the Kanban Method over years spent managing and coaching Agile development teams, at companies such as Sprint, Motorola and Microsoft, by integrating Lean thinking with Agile principles and practices. This compendium of anecdotes and epiphanies tells a very personal story as he shares his journey on the road to Kanban - now a popular method for improving predictability while managing change and risk in organizations worldwide.

This collection of over 150 articles compiled from the Agile Management blog and several other sources represents 12 years (1999-2011) of invaluable insights by David J. Anderson in managing software development. Each article has been carefully selected and grouped into one of 16 chapters on topics such as Leadership, Management, Peter Drucker, Theory of Constraints and Eli Goldratt, W. Edwards Deming, Human Resource Departments and Policies, Agile, Lean and Leading Change Initiatives. Each chapter is introduced with contemporary commentary explaining its relevance and contribution to both Agile and Kanban.

This book might have been titled, "The Very Best of Agile Management Blog" but that would do it an injustice. Each article has been lovingly reworked from the original to provide a coherent flowing story that introduces both the need for Kanban and how it emerged as a leading method for improving agility in knowledge work organizations. Many articles are enhanced with new observations and reflection on how the Agile community has progressed since original publication. In total there are around 20,000 words of current insights explaining why Kanban is necessary and what makes it an important innovation in the development of Agile methods.

"This is the book on leadership we've been waiting for." - Kurt Husler

"David successfully blends the principles of flow, queues, theory of constraints, Lean, and Six Sigma to concoct a very powerful message that I have come to believe over the years: ‘You’ve got more capacity than you think!’” - Charan Atreya

"Numerous gems in the journey of a learning mind"
By Ellen Gottesdiener
David Anderson's latest book provides fascinating insight into the ongoing evolution of Kanban. David has collected his best writings, smartly categorized them, and provided retrospective comments on his thinking - including self-reflections on where and how his thinking changed.

I especially appreciate reading about David's influences. He is forthright about giving them credit--something that in itself is a form of leadership. Those influences include Taiichi Ohno (Toyota Production System) on muda, muri and mura; Eliyahu M. Goldratt on Theory of Constraints, specifically The Five Focusing Steps; John Seddon and Peter Senge on Systems Thinking; and W. Edwards Deming.

You'll find many memorable gems in this book about risk, leadership, estimating, trust, analysis, and of course flow. It's powerful for our Kanban, Lean, and Agile community to learn from the learning of its leaders.

Another classic, for sure...
By Adail Retamal
Having watched David steps since 2003, read all his books, and worked with him in Brazil in the pre- and post-Kanban era (we delivered the Zen of Agile Management workshop in 2008, and his first Kanban workshop in Brazil in 2010), I can only say that I highly recommend this book! The lessons and insights here are most valuable and will serve both newbies and experts alike. It is also a historical document, testifying about the maturation and evolution process that happened in the Agile community. Adapting TOC, Kanban, Lean and other production improvement techniques to knowledge work is definitely a major contribution by David to the management body of knowledge.

An fascinating read
By G. Cohen
David Anderson has been a tremendous influence on my thinking over the years, and he ranks in the top few authors whose writing is always a must read. He has done it again with "Lessons in Agile Management". His latest book brings together diverse bodies of knowledge from queuing theory, cycle times, and flow to the nature of knowledge work, leading knowledge workers and improving the effectiveness of teams. The book is a collection, with updates, of writings spanning nearly a decade. It catalogs Anderson's personal journey to tackle the challenges of large software development projects through what has become his Kanban change management method. Anderson synthesizes the works of W. Edward Deming's, Peter Drucker's Eli Goldratt, and others with his own analysis and insights on applying these theories to software development.

These is much to learn from Anderson's journey, and it is a gift that these lessons are available in a single book.

The Dark Flower, by John Galsworthy

The dark flower of thwarted passion lies at the heart of John Galsworthy’s compelling masterpiece. The Dark Flower tells of thirty troubled years in the life and loves of Mark Lennan. It was first published in 1913, portraying a world unwittingly at the end of an era. The wider social and political upheavals of the early twentieth century are intertwined with Lennan’s personal travails. In the first dozen pages, Galsworthy establishes his mastery of narrative and draws the reader into a plot which takes on a momentum of its own. It is hard to think of another novelist who explores a lover’s heart so poignantly and sustainedly.

Review

"To the reader with a critical instinct, the first impression made by Mr. Galsworthy's new novel, The Dark Flower, is that of keen delight at the sheer technical skill of it, the beautiful symmetry of its structure and its symbolism. It is only after enjoying this feature to the utmost that such lovers of fine artistry will begin to enjoy the equally fine interpretation of an almost universal phase of human life." —The Bookman (December, 1913)

By Tamsin Knox
Galsworthy is a wonderful writer. I am rating this edition which appears to have been printed from a Kindle file. There is no publisher, the page numbers are on bottom left of each page, the binding is cheap, there is no table of contents. The cover is attractive in order to sell the book on-line but this is not a published book, merely a print-out of text. Avoid this.

Dark and Deliciously Mean
By A. Caporaso
I'm glad I found this book. The characters are flawed and unlikeable, but it is written in a way that you want to know what happens to them, whether they will get what they deserve. In a way, it read like a study for the Forsythe Saga. Similar character development.

excellent Galsworthy novel
By D. Wolitzer
An outstanding effort by Galsworthy. Quite different from the Forsyte series and other novels of his that I've read. A bit like Hardy's Well Beloved, but more realistic. The 3-episode format was very effective, with some sparkling moments in each part. The free Kindle edition is a good one.

Low-quality and savagely overpriced
By Dimitri Shvorob
It's not all bad - I really like the R-resources links in Chapter 15, and give points for Chapters 10 and 11, with basic examples of text mining and network analysis, and for the predictive-modeling case study in Chapter 13. (But why do the percentages on page 172 exceed 100?) However, "R and data mining" is not worth anywhere near $70, and as far as substance and quality are concerned, it is one of the weakest books I have seen. On one hand, you are introduced to several useful built-in R functions and "add-on" R packages, including "party" for classification trees, "cluster" and "fpc" for clustering, "arules" for association-rule learning, "tm" for text mining and "igraph" for network visualization. On the other hand, until Chapter 15, there is pretty little value-added - it's as if the author googled a package, and copy-pasted a vignette from the doc. Things are really basic throughout, even where one might expect complexity - Chapter 14 has the most disappointing example. The page count (200+) overstates content, as the book is seriously heavy on whitespace: code and output, hideously typeset, takes up way more space than needed and is often redundant. I do not recommend the purchase, and suggest "Machine learning with R" by Brett Lantz as a better alternative.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

Pricey and data unavailable

The book is way too pricey for its content and some data in the examples are not even available publicly and need to be purchased separately

Not worth buying
By Graham Webster
I have only read a draft copy that the author has / had on his website, and it is a very disappointing book. For example, the content about each data mining method is very sparse, and as one other reviewer noted, with lots of white space, code, and output. Very little comment about how to use the methods in practice. It certainly looks as though for these chapters the author has copy / pasted material from R package documentation. Not worth buying, there is a lot of other material available of much better quality.

From the Back Cover
The cover photos show two people in two places connected to a wider world through modern technology. For many, such images evoke a world of social, economic, and cultural "globalization." Yet what does globalization mean? Are the lives of the individuals on the cover, one in Yemen (front cover) and the other in the United States (back cover), converging? Can we increasingly think of ourselves as living in one world? Some might say "yes," but a look into the geographical context within which these individuals lead their lives reveals a more complicated answer. These two people live in places that have developed distinct human and physical attributes. Moreover, there is a geography to globalization itself, in that internationalized technologies, economic interactions, and cultural forms affect some places more than others. If we are to understand the complexities of the modern world, we must consider how global forces are interacting with local and regional geographies to produce the patterns and processes that are shaping our constantly changing, endlessly fascinating world.

Marred by inaccuracies
By Canadian reader
The prose in this book is well-written and easy to read, a blessing given how indigestibly ponderous most textbooks are, even when they're expressing otherwise simple ideas. It's what the text says and doesn't say that's at issue.

On the Middle East, for example, the text notes that Palestinians "migrated or fled" during the 1948 war. Fair enough, it's an attempt not to take sides regarding the wildly different narratives of this event, a tragedy in the lives of 600,000 people. But the text does not even mention that at the same time, in direct response to the founding of Israel, 800,000 Jews in Arab Middle Eastern countries were expelled from these countries. That's a strange omission in a book on human geography. At another point in the book we read that from 1917 to 1948, when Palestine was under the British Mandate, the British ENCOURAGED Jewish immigration to Palestine. I guess that's why so many Jews, fleeing death from the Nazis with nothing but the clothes on their backs, were forced to risk their lives again, trying to land on the beach in the middle of the night from leaky ships out of Cyprus. The immigration quotas imposed on Jews during the British Mandate are a historical fact. I don't know enough about other areas of the world to critique what the text says about them----it would be interesting to hear from other reviewers--but with this level of omission and inaccuracy, can I trust anything else the book says?

In addition, a glance through the book reveals other errors and confusions. Page 4: What are the units for the Gross National Income in the map? US dollars? Or is this a relative scale? Page 14-15: 90% or over of what?? 90% of Calfiornia students said they'd prefer to live in California? California received an approval rating of 90% or over as a place to live? Page 40: The world population distribution says that "1 dot represents 100,000 people". Note that there is ONE dot in the vicinity of, I guess, Calgary and none in the vicinity of Edmonton--both cities now have about a million people, so they should have about 10 dots each, no? And this is just in the first 40 pages.

This book was supposed to be released in December 2005, but there were delays and I received the book only yesterday. There should have been time to pick up mistakes like the above.

EXCELLENT TEXTBOOK!!!

I wanted to take the Human Geography AP Exam but we didn't have a course at our school so I had to study for it on my own. As there are no published AP guides, my only source of information was this textbook. I not only scored a 5 on the exam, but I also tested out of the second semester of Human Geography once I got to college as well!! Fabulous textbook!

"Whip up a Christmas plum pudding and settle in for season 3." --People Magazine

"American fans have to wait until January to return to the lives of the fascinating upstairs and downstairs residents. To hold yourself over, try some of these delicious dishes before returning to the big house." --The Today Show Bites Blog

"Add a bit of sophistication and style to your Downton Abbey watching parties in the months to come. The great thing about the book is that it is not only laid out by meal course from Hor D'Oeuvres to the Finishing Touches of Sweets and Desserts, there are also some bits and bobs that will help you prepare Afternoon Tea, course pairings, tips for table seatings and etiquette guidelines." --Tellyspotting.org

"Downton Abbey fans in America may be feeling hard up for some period drama, and the knowledge that we won't get to watch season 3 until January 2013 has us scheming up ways to get our fix. There's one other way to consume some Downton Abbey drama: by cooking it. That's right, The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook is on the way, by Emily Ansara Baines, who also gifted us with The Unofficial Hunger Games Cookbook. Helpfully, she includes conversion tables for metric measurements, baking pan sizes and temperatures - these alone are worth the $21.95 cover price. Downton Abbey fans, get cooking!" --Wall Street Journal

"Not only is the cookbook a fascinating look at the British television series itself, it's a great historical look at the types of foods that were eaten by British royalty in the early 1900s. If you're a fan of Downton Abbey British television series or British cooking, you definitely need to buy The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook." --Blog Critics

"Fans of Downton Abbey, you have to reasons to rejoice! Your long wait for the start of Downton Abbey, Season 3 in the United States is mitigated by the publication of Emily Ansara Baines' The Unofficial Downton Abbey Cookbook. Peruse through its pages and you'll find period dishes from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. For the Downtown Abbey fan whose growing anticipation for Season 3 needs an outlet, this cookbook would make for the perfect gift." --Epicurious.com

"It's filled with classic English recipes inspired by the show, tidbits about the denizens of Downton and tons of asides guaranteed to make a true fan smile and nod knowingly. Possibly the best part about the cookbook? It showcases the upstairs and the downstairs, just like the show. Even if you're not a Downton Abbey fan, this is a great general English cookbook to have on the shelf. If you are a Downton fan, it's probably a must buy - or an easy holiday gift for a fellow fan." --Chicagoist

"Filled with classic English recipes inspired by the series, tidbits about the denizens of Downton Abbey, and plenty of asides guaranteed to make a true fan smile and nod knowingly." --Daily Herald Tribune

"Baines seems to have done a fair amount of research on the dining habits of Edwardian England. For fans of the program this book provides a good collection of recipes for re-creating a meal that those upstairs or downstairs at real English estates might have had." --The Advocate

"If you are enjoying further exploration of the trends of the Downton Abbey-inspired era, you'll love the etiquette lessons and 'time goes by' insets throughout the hardcover book. With this collection of delicacies...you'll feel as sophisticated and poised as the men and women of Downton when you prepare these upstairs and downstairs favorites." - Monsters & Critics

I had such high hopes. :-(
By Patricia Utley
Giving it 2 stars because it's not TERRIBLE but it's certainly not great.

I am a HUGE fan of the show and this season I decided to cook along each week.
I have done a little "Downton Abbey Dinners" project and have had some fun.

I wanted so much to love this book and for a few months while it was sitting on the coffee table as I waited for the January premier, I didn't really notice the errors in the recipes. Once I started cooking I noticed that the recipes are poorly written, serving sizes are off and in some cases the recipes are word for word what I have found to be available online. I don't mean mostly the same, I mean WORD FOR WORD the same.

Most of the recipes that I have tried have been pretty good BUT many are missing steps. The steps missing would leave someone relying on the cookbook thinking "Now what?" and then thinking they had done something wrong when the dish didn't turn out properly. I have been able to move on and know what to do but I've said out loud "Um, there are a few steps missing here".

I have also noticed that the serving sizes are WAY off in some of the recipes. Last week I made an appetizer soup and the recipes said "Serves 4". Ummmm yeah... no.
The 4 people being served this appetizer would need to be "Jack & The Beanstalk" sized giants. The soup was good but only serves 4 if you're planning on it being a main dish for 2 days. (it's VERY rich and for my palate needed salt and pepper)

Some recipes are so simple and have worked really well but you will have to think about some of the measurements, because they just don't make sense, and adjust a bit. Of course I made my own personal adjustments but I think most that cook do that.

I write a cooking blog and had planned to give a copy of the book so some blog followers but I just can't. There are too many errors for me to stand behind it.

Not close enough to the show
By Virginia F. Richards-taylor
Watching the show I wanted the recipes for the souffles (well, maybe not the kidney souffle) and savories mentioned in the stories. If I'd done this book, I'd have noted each food specifically mentioned in the shows, starting with the chicken with chopped egg that Daisy almost poisons in the first episode, to the puffs Alfred made, the mayonnaise he fixes, and the meat pie we see Mrs. Patmore cutting for the funeral. None of these was in there. I suppose the author simply made food that she liked.

Downton Abbey - Cookbook
By Mari
I enjoyed the commentary with each recipe. I LOVED the tie ins to the show. (Mrs. Pattmores Dropped Chicken) It showed that the author at least was familiar with the series...I
I know it is an UN-Official version happy to see dishes like Kegeree, Lancashire Hot Pot & Bubble & Squeek but I was still a little disappointed that the recipes weren't more 'period', for instance: Oysters Rockefeller: ( I am aware that the Antoine's chef who created it supposedly went to his grave with the orig. ingredients used BUT to include 'monterey jack' in the books recipe...really...(?!) I highly doubt THAT particular cheese (made by 19th c Mexican Franciscan friars of Monterey, California) would've ever set foot in Mrs. Pattmores kitchen!
I am planning on making the Sally Lunn bread ( which I've actually tried once AT Sally Lunns - IN Bath England - so I'm def hoping that recipe is faithful to the orig!
All in all a very nice, well thought out cookbook for fans, of which I am one!

Amazing Amazon.com And Its Brilliant CEO/Founder
By Rebecca*rhapsodyinblue*
"There is so much stuff that has yet to be invented.
There's so much new that's going to happen.
People don't have any idea yet how impactful the Internet is going to be and that it is still Day 1 in such a big way." ~ Jeff Bezos ~

Following the death of Apple's brilliant CEO, Steve Jobs, in October of 2011, there were many articles written on who will be the next Steve Jobs. One such article was from CNN written by Doug Gross who came up with a list of dotcom CEOs and high-powered executives who are worth considering. On top of the list is technology genius, visionary, innovator, dynamic CEO of Earth's biggest online retail store, Amazon.com. Many, including myself, believe that the most likely candidate would be Jeff Bezos, who at an early age, had already demonstrated genius-like qualities and outside-the-box thinking. And there are quite a number of similarities between the two.

Brad Stone, a senior writer for Bloomberg Businessweek who has covered Amazon and Silicon Valley technology for many years for Newsweek and New York Times publications, has written a well-crafted, most comprehensive, no-holds-barred 372-page-hardcover that is filled with a wealth of information on amazing Amazon.com and its brilliant Founder/CEO, Jeff Bezos, who is one of the greatest and most famous personalities in technology industry and business sector in the last two decades. The author's prose is sublime and his writing style is exemplary--the kind that commands the readers' undivided attention and stay focused and engrossed with their reading.

Although I have read a lot of articles, news reports and information about Amazon on both print and digital media, reading this book gave me more insight on how Jeff Bezos--with his carefully selected team of smart people from newly graduates to seasoned executives from other companies--run Amazon.com and made it what it is today--a multi-billion-global-company that has 97K manpower worldwide. It has evolved from an online bookstore to "everything store" that sells 200 items per second and has become a one-stop-shop and go-to site for online shopping. A few years ago a new fulfillment center was opened in San Bernardino, California.

"The Everything Store - Jeff Bezos and The Age of Amazon" is an interesting and enthralling book from start to finish and is extremely detailed to the extent that the reader feels privileged and privy to the inside world of the giant online retail store and its highly-intellectual leader and his team. It takes the reader into the most intriguing behind-the-scenes of Amazon's operation. In a way, he reminds me of my boss in the past, a Senior Vice President, Trust and Investment Department of a fast-growing financial institution who expected everyone from his department to be focused 110% and excel in every project they do and whose mantra was "I want results, not reasons." He was one of the very best, highly-educated, well-respected SVPs we had and we looked up to him as a role model. Through him, we all learned how to develop an excellent work ethic and how to deliver results in a timely manner.

The success and incredible growth of Amazon.com is phenomenal. Of course, it was not at all smooth-sailing along the way. There were tough times too during its first few years of operation. Brad Stone mentioned that "the company had lost $52K in 1994 and was on track to lose another $300K that year." But for Jeff Bezos and his excellent team, tough times never last. They were well-equipped with brilliant ideas, strategies, drive and determination that were utilized to the fullest during those tough times. His four secrets of success are: Customer Obsession, Invention, Long-Term Thinking and It's Always Day 1. On May 15, 1997, Amazon went public and traded an IPO of $18 per share. It was a tremendous success and raised a whopping amount of $54 Million which resulted in the company's 900% growth in annual revenues. Now the stock is valued at over $700 per share.

In the past two decades the Princeton Summa Cum Laude has come a long way and became a business savvy and sharp negotiator as evidenced by his acquisitions of Zappos for $900 Million, Quidsi for $540 Million and of late The Washington Post for $250 Million. His other business ventures include Blue Origin, Bezos Expeditions and Bezos Family Foundation. It doesn't take a Brain Surgeon to figure out the huge success of Jeff Bezos and Amazon.com. He has a remarkable business acumen and not to mention his lofty goals with pinpoint accuracy.

In 1999, he was named by TIME magazine as Person of The Year. Forbes named him as one of "America's Best Leaders" and he is ranked #15 on their list of "The World's Most Powerful People 2013." He was also featured as "Person of The Week" in Diane Sawyer's World News at ABC sometime in August of 2013.

The following are some interesting quotes that I've found to be noteworthy:

"Jeff is very clear and simple about his goals, and the way he articulates them makes it easy for others, because it's consistent. If you look at why Amazon is so different than almost any other company that started early on the Internet, it's because Jeff approached it from the very beginning with that long-term vision." ~ Danny Hillis ~

"At Amazon there were a hundred and fifty good ideas all the time and Jeff was capable of developing a new one every day." ~ Joe Galli, Jr. ~

"I have realized about myself that I'm very motivated by people counting on me. I like to be counted on." ~ Jeff Bezos ~

"Like other great entrepreneurs, including Walt Disney, Henry Ford and Steve Jobs, Bezos was turning imagination into reality, the fancies of his youth into actual physical things." ~ Brad Stone ~

"When we go ask him questions, it's worth listening to his answers." ~ Rodney Brooks ~

"Every anecdote from a customer matters. We research each of them because they tell us something about our metrics and processes. It's an audit that is done for us by our customers. We treat them as precious sources of information." ~ Jeff Wilke ~

"Amazon may be the most beguiling company that ever existed, and it is just getting started." ~ Brad Stone ~

P.S. The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and The Age of Amazon" won the prestigious 2013 Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of The Year Award. Congratulations to Brad Stone for being the winner for 2013. The awarding was held in London on November 18, 2013.

There were six most influential business books that were selected by the judging panel as finalists then they narrowed them down to three titles including "The Everything Store," "The Billionaire's Apprentice" and "The Alchemists."

One of the judges described "The Everything Store" as "inspirational for the young entrepreneurs and it was full of management lessons." Other descriptions of the book include the following:

"Most compelling and enjoyable business book."

"Must-read for disrupters around the world."

"Provocative take on Amazon's transformation of the publishing, consumer electronics and cloud computing industries."

P.P.S. Thank you Amazon.com for being amazing and Jeff Bezos for being awesomely brilliant! I wish you more power and success!

Competing Motivations in Grammar and UsageFrom Oxford University Press

This volume examines the conflicting factors that shape the content and form of grammatical rules in language usage. Speakers and addressees need to contend with these rules when expressing themselves and when trying to comprehend messages. For example, there are on-going competitions between the speaker's interests and the addressee's needs, or between constraints imposed by grammar and those imposed by online processing. These competitions influence a wide variety of systems, including case marking, agreement and word order, politeness forms, lexical choices, and the position of relative clauses.

Chapters in the book analyse grammar and usage in adult language as well as first and second language acquisition, and the motivations that drive historical change. Several of the chapters seek explanations for the competitions involved, based on earlier accounts including the Competition Model, Natural Morphology, the functional-typological tradition, and Optimality Theory. The book will be of interest to linguists from a wide variety of backgrounds, particularly those interested in psycholinguistics, historical linguistics, philosophy of language, and language acquisition, from advanced undergraduate level upwards.

About the Author

Brian MacWhinney is Professor of Psychology, Computational Linguistics, and Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon University. He has developed a model of first and second language acquisition, processing, and disorders called the Competition Model, which describes how language learning emerges from forces operating on lexically-based patterns across divergent timeframes. It has been tested through cross-linguistic experimentation, neuroimaging, online language learning, and analysis of the CHILDES and TalkBank corpora. His recent publications include The CHILDES Project: Tools for Analyzing Talk (3rd ed; Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000) and, co-edited with Roberta Klatzky and Marlene Behrmann, Embodiment, Ego-Space, and Action (Psychology Press 2008).

Andrej Malchukov is a Senior Researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute for Linguistic Research (Russian Academy of Sciences) and is currently affiliated to the University of Mainz as a Visiting Professor. In addition to descriptive work on Siberian languages, his main research interests lie in the domain of language typology. His publications include the edited volumes The Oxford Handbook of Case (with Andrew Spencer; OUP 2009), Studies in Ditransitive Constructions: A Comparative Handbook (with Bernard Comrie and Martin Haspelmath; Mouton de Gruyter 2010) and Impersonal Constructions: A Cross-Linguistic Perspective (with Anna Siewierska; John Benjamins 2011).

Edith Moravscik is Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she has taught for over 30 years. Her publications include the textbooks An Introduction to Syntax and An Introduction to Syntactic Theory (both Continuum 2006), and Introducing Language Typology (CUP 2013) and the edited volumes Functionalism and Formalism in Linguistics (with Michael Darnell, Frederick Newmeyer, Michael Noonan, and Kathleen Wheatley; John Benjamins 1999) and Formulaic Language (with Roberta Corrigan, Hamid Ouali, and Kathleen Wheatley). Insightful book on communication skills
By Dr.
Jesse Nirenberg's book is a timeless gem that is well worth reading. He has an extraordinary understanding of how to communicate to get ideas across, how to listen with the purpose of understanding another person, how to deal with heated emotions in conversations, how to detect and deal with another person's irrationality, how to hear mixed contexts in a conversation and much more. To give you a first hand view of the value of this book, I have excerpted some of my favorite quotes.
On exposing the irrational: "...resistance is often based on a combination of rational and irrational elements. Brought into the light of discussion the rational element will maintain its dimensions. It will remain as important as it ever was. But the irrational element, similarly exposed, will tend to evaporate. The force it had in the dark of the individual's interior dies out when brought to light. As a result of discussing the resistance its force becomes reduced to the strength of the rational element."
On active listening: "Meaningful listening is somewhat like putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Hearing the words is like receiving the pieces. But listening meaningfully is putting the pieces together to form a picture. When the listener asks a question that should have been unnecessary he has just been receiving the pieces but not putting them together."
On resistance to rational ideas: "... to persuade someone to your way of thinking it is necessary that he first pass through a stage of resistance... His resistance, his struggle to convince you of the opposite, is a sign that he is fully involved in consid-ering your position. He isn't comfortable with his own. He knows deep down that it doesn't make sense but fights to hold it anyway by trying to convince you as a way of convincing himself.... He is responsive to your arguments even though the response at the moment is oppositional. One part of him is in conflict with another."
On the change process: "People do not change positions immediately upon hearing a logical reason for doing so, no matter how good the case for changing is. Even though the evidence clearly favors changing positions, people are hesitant to do it in a single jump. They want to work it over in their minds, make sure they under-stand it and are doing the right thing. They want to thread their way cautiously to the new position, surveying the ground around them to make sure it's firm."
This book is a treasure find for anyone wanting to understand and improve his own thinking and communication methods.
