About the Author
Julia Cook was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. While living in Utah, she began teaching children how to ski. That experience led to a love of teaching in general. Julia now lives with her husband and three children in Fremont, Nebraska. She has a Master s degree in Elementary School Counseling. While serving as a guidance counselor, Julia often used children s books to enhance her classroom lessons. The goal behind Julia s books is to actively involve young people into her fun and creative stories and teach them to become better. In addition to writing, she also does keynotes and inspirational talks for children and adults.

it works!

This book captivated my kindergarten children. I have children with Asperger syndrome who are very bright and intelligent but often don't do the appropriate thing in social situations. We had a big problem with one particular child, his finger, his nose, and more. We laughed so much with this book. The kids requested it over and over. The therapists, guidance counselors, and other teachers want to borrow it. It Works!!! After one day, the nose picking, etc. was extinguished. The book sends a powerful and explicit message about germs and about socially acceptable behavior. It taught the children how others react to their behavior. It is a must have in any early childhood or special education class. Love it.

About the Author

H. Magdi Selim is professor of soil physics, A. George and Mildred L. Caldwell Endowed Professor, School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Science at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. He is internationally recognized for his research in the areas of kinetics of reactive chemicals in heterogeneous porous media and transport modeling of dissolved chemicals in water-saturated and unsaturated soils. Dr. Selim is the original developer of the two-site and second-order models for describing the retention processes of dissolved chemicals in soils and natural materials in porous media. Pioneering works also include multistep/multireaction and nonlinear kinetic models for heavy metals, radionuclides, explosive contaminants, and phosphorus and pesticides in soils and subsurface media. His research interests include saturated and unsaturated water flow in multilayered one- and two-dimensional systems.

Being tired isn't the same as being rich

One could dismiss "Fight Club" as a predictable techno-thriller about testosterone-driven males, alienated from society, who find salvation in fighting other guys, bare-knuckled, in dark basements, until one of them goes limp. But that would miss the more interesting archetypal point Palahniuk explicitly trying to make. This is a book about the psychological development of a young man who had no father to help him make sense of the postmodern world, his split-off shadow, and ultimately the healing power of coming into a relationship with that raw, disturbing underground part of himself. The ego must be willing to inflict the blow itself, and strong enough to survive it.

"Fight Club" is an imperfect novel. But Palahniuk's ambitious attempt to suggest that our efforts to integrate disowned parts of ourselves could help free our psyche from the grip of corporate power and pervasive consumerism is enough to make it interesting. For all people who care about finding out the truth about who they are, this novel is a virtual manifesto!

A Must Read

So complex, so dark, so full of surprises. I adore this book. The movie was an excellent adaptation, but the book is so much more! Such emotionally exhilarating characters full of honest pain, angst, and raw determination to hang to the bottom of life and not only live, but thrive. Tyler's character, emotionally abusive, scalding, and toxic, is so enrapturing you follow suit with his victims and it's easy to see why he's lovable with all his flaws. Smooth talking, angry, and deceptive, it's easy to follow along with the space monkeys if one would listen to him talk long enough. That is pure talent in the writing arena, to have such a multi-dimensional character. Hands-down, one of my favorite books. I wish I had read it sooner because in the darkest of times, it was definitely a therapeutic read.

Just Buy This Book

Great book, no matter how many times I read it I learn something new. Obviously Fight Club is about violence, but it's about fighting and how men are trying to claim back their natural born masculinity in a day and age where we are told to be white collar workers and work cushy day jobs behind a computer monitor, requesting "cornflower blue." There's some sexual content, like in the movie, and whether I should describe this as written in first person or second person is beyond me. After all, the guy has split personalities. So what do I put here? Hmmmm. Whatever. Just buy this book.

A Truly Useful Toolbox for Data Warehouse and ETL Developers

As a veteran data warehouse developer and architect, I've seen the good, the bad and the truly ugly. There are plenty of books that discuss the theories of data warehousing, but very few provide the kind of hands-on tools and code samples that Ciampa's book offers.

I also appreciate the fact that Ciampa address both ETL and warehousing concerns. Although these are often considered different development genres, they are attached at the hip and, in many data warehouses, indistinguishable from one another. Again, Brian's code samples address the nuances of surrogate keys, incremental loads, etc.

Brian's code samples worked well in my development warehouse, and the SQL is generic enough that it can be ported easily to most ANSI-SQL compliant databases. And while we're talking about SQL ... I know that there's a lot of ETL tools and some IDE's that let you build data warehouses in a "drag and drop" fashion, but my experience is that developers inevitably migrate to a lot of SQL code to manage the nuances. By taking this right to the SQL level, Ciampa has spared the reader the need to abstract complex SQL out of simple drag-and-drop operations.

Whether you work through the book sequentially to develop a full understanding of warehouse and ETL development, or whether you keep this book as a deskside reference for your day-to-day coding, there's definite value here to anyone that has to design, develop or maintain a data warehouse. My well-thumbed copy is one of the few books that lives permanently on my desk, and it's more than earned a spot among the seminal texts of Ralph Kimball, etc.

All codes and examples are for Oracle and in PL/SQL. Very good examples.

Although the description of this book doesn't say so, all the examples on this book are based on Oracle and PL/SQL.

If you are totally unfamiliar with PL/SQL, you will have difficult time following the examples. If you do not have access to a Oracle database, then you will not be able to execute any of the provided (downloadable) code.

The author does a fantastic job of describing the ETL process and precisely what is involved in the ETL of both dimension and fact tables. Furthermore, the author covers issues such as granularity, SCD, verification, and drill across.

If you are totally unfamiliar with ETL, but have some familiarity with Oracle and data warehousing (star schema), then I can recommend this book. If you are unfamiliar with either Oracle or data warehousing, then the book can lose you in a hurry.

Finally, some of the code examples simply did not work on my Oracle 11g install. I didn't dig into it, but I just thought the author should know.

Pros:
1)Step-by-step instructions on each of the ETL process on both the dimension and the fact tables.
2)Good coverage of real life scenarios and challenges facing ETL.

Cons:
1)Requires one to be familiar with Oracle and PL/SQL.
2)Requires one to be familiar with data warehousing (star schema). But this isn't the book's fault.
3)Some of the code examples simply did not work on my Oracle 11g.

X-Men is renowned for being one of the most girl-friendly super hero comics franchises, so a shojo (girl's) manga re-boot of the series is not that far-fetched. The conceit of seeing the X-Men redrawn as supercute boys, or in the case of Beast, redrawn as an adorable human-size badgerlike thing, works without a hitch. 15-year-old Kitty Pryde, who has the mutant ability to slip through walls, enrolls in Xaviar Academy, where she meets classic X-men characters, most still in their teen years. By some unexplained twist of fate that could only happen in shojo, Pryde is the only female student (Storm is a teacher). This makes the formerly insecure girl very popular with her peers, so much so that she is asked to join the Hellfire Club, which is hilariously reimagined as a parody of Ouran High School Host Club rather than a sinister organization of wealthy elites. Telgemeier and Roman deliver a delightful script that will appeal to old fans while being friendly toward new readers or fans of the X-Men films. The art by Anzu (TheReformed) is over-the-top shojo parody, with lots of screentone and flowers. (Aug.)

Recommended for shojo fans and X-Men fans with open minds.

I'm a huge long-time fan of both X-Men and shojo manga, so I was extremely excited when I heard this book was coming out!

I knew from the recent Wolverine manga that it would be a reimagining, so I wanted to go into it and not dwell too much on thoughts like, "He wouldn't act like this!" or "This is so wrong!" But I didn't even have those thoughts when I read this one! It was remarkable how most of the characters seemed true to their mainstream selves to a point; the changes that were evident were still really interesting and not too out of left field. (I'm a bit worried that one classic couple won't end up together due to an age difference [?], but they're not together in the comics anymore, either. And then there's Kitty and her classic comic love... Not happening here! My jaw kind of dropped when I saw him in his new form...)

The art was beautiful, unlike a lot of OEL manga I've read. (Which usually have great stories but the manga art seems a little "off.") And the art inside matched the gorgeous cover!

Shojo fans who don't even know about the X-Men will like this and I think X-Men fans who are willing to read it with an open mind may like it, too. Like one of the authors said his sister kind of said, X-Men has always been full of "bishounen" to me--'bout time someone treated the story that way!

I can't wait for the next volume! I want to see what other X-Men are joining the school.

A Love Letter to Shojo + X-Men Fans

A fresh take on the X-Men, mixing Xavier's School with Shojo manga (a la Ouran). Like a love letter to everyone who loves both.

We follow Kitty Pryde as the only current female student at Xavier's in her first months at the school. It's so fun to pick out each character in their new manga form (Beast is Totoro-like, Cyclops is still sanctimonious, except in teenage version, which means straight edge, ah, beautiful).
I can't wait for volume 2, I hear there will be more female students!

I liked it a lot more than I thought I would

the title says it all. As a girl, big x-men fan, and otaku I just could not say no. And I waited for so long with multiple publishing dates that were always changed. Anyway,I figured I'd have my fun laughing at it or maybe even hate it but as a manga it was very well written and the art was very VERY good. I rate it a four out of five all because of Marvel. Why do you create so many different realities Marvel?! Jean Grey is a teacher but Scott Summer's is a student? The robot colossus was on the line of good and bad, the sight of it turned me off but the laugh that followed allowed me to accept it. I wil buy the next volume for sure.
So if you're an x-men fan I suggest this manga. Even for guys who want a good laugh. And the powers/action is pretty good too. The shojo didn't overpower the manga which was good. I liked it a lot

Carol is a national leader in integrating principles of prevention, personalization, and youth development into everyday practices and structures for secondary schools. Carol has taught students at all grade levels and in 1973 co-founded a small urban secondary school in St. Louis. She has served on education faculties at University of Missouri, and National-Louis, Lesley, and Washington Universities. Facilitating healthy development and academic success for every student has been at the heart of her work with ESR. She has supported principals, leadership teams, and faculty in their efforts to personalize learning in large and small schools, create more coherent systems of discipline and student support, and develop effective teaming and professional learning communities.
