The Lupus Book: A Guide for Patients and Their Families, by Daniel Wallace

The symptoms are puzzling, intermittent, and frequently seem unrelated: mysterious rashes, sore joints, fatigue, headaches. It can take years to properly diagnose, often leaving its victims suffering not only from the disease, but from the uncertainty about whether they have the disease and from the not-insignificant problem of finding a physician to treat them. The disease is lupus, which, simply put, is what happens to the body when it becomes allergic to itself. It is quite widespread and it is highly deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly.
Now patients and their families can turn to The Lupus Book, a clear, reassuring guide that explains virtually every aspect of the disease. Written by Daniel J. Wallace, M.D., one of the world's leading experts on the subject, The Lupus Book is packed with useful, easy-to-understand information and practical guidance for the sufferer. Here the reader will discover clear descriptions of the symptoms that most commonly afflict victims of lupus, a helpful survey of all aspects of diagnosis--from why the disease is so difficult to recognize to the latest, most innovative tests--and background information on the cause of the disease, which researchers now believe is genetic in origin. Wallace shows how lupus may affect different organ systems in the body, including the brain, heart, and lungs; he offers well-informed advice on how patients can work with their doctors to take an active role in fighting the disease through exercise, diet, and medication; and perhaps most important, he answers the questions he is most often asked by his patients, including queries on prevention, cure, sun exposure, pregnancy, and many other concerns. Throughout the book, Wallace reveals a talent for communicating difficult concepts to the general reader as he illustrates his discussion with numerous anecdotes culled from his years of clinical experience (he has treated over one thousand lupus patients).
Nearly one million people suffer from lupus in the United States alone. More common than leukemia, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined, lupus is a pervasive and little- understood condition. With The Lupus Book in hand, lupus sufferers as well as their families, friends, and physicians have a reliable guide that will answer their questions and help them to better manage their day-to-day fight against this debilitating disease.

From Library Journal
Nearly one million people in the United States suffer from lupus erythematosus, which develops when the body becomes allergic to itself. Because of the difficulty of diagnosing lupus, several years may elapse before an accurate diagnosis is made, resulting in mental anguish and damage to vital organs. By increasing public awareness of this disease, Wallace, a world authority on lupus, hopes to effect earlier diagnosis. In a lay companion to the renowned Dubois' Lupus Erythematosus (Williams & Wilkins, 1992. 4th ed.), which he coauthored, Wallace thoroughly explains the body's immunological processes and the causes, diagnosis, management, manifestations, prognosis, and genetic risks of lupus. Containing detailed illustrations and charts similar to those found in medical texts, The Lupus Book is written for allied health professionals as well as patients at the college reading level. Several other current books offer simpler explanations and more easily understood charts while placing a greater emphasis on coping skills; Mark Horowitz's Coping with Lupus (Penguin, 1994) and Sheldon Blau's Living with Lupus (LJ 11/1/93) are among the best. Wallace's book is recommended for those who require a detailed explanation of the disease.?Mary Prottsman, Medical Lib., Enterprise, Ala.

Review

"This excellent work takes the most complicated of facts and readily explains them for the layperson. Lupus is not an easy disease for physician or layperson to fathom. Dr. Wallace's book will finally preclude the lists of questions patients ask."--Robert G. Lahita, M.D., Ph.D., College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University

"Wallace, who has the largest lupus clinical practice in the U.S., writes for the many lupus patients who do not understand their disease and are fearful of its debilitating symptoms. This book is highly relevant, since nearly one million people suffer from lupus in the U.S., more than from leukemia, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined."--Choice

"Wallace thoroughly explains the body's immunological processes and the causes, diagnosis, management, manifestations, prognosis, and genetic risks of lupus."--Library Journal

"The Lupus Book is absolutely fabulous!"--John H. Klippel, M.D., Clinical Director, National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases

"Although designed as a guide for lupus patients and their families, this book is of benefit to health professionals as well...Readers gain valuable insight into what causes lupus, who gets the disease, how the body is affected and why, and how various agents such as anti-inflammatory agents and disease-modifying drugs are used in treatment.--Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine

"The book explains a complicated disease in easy-to-understand terms and is suited for the motivated patient wanting a concise, practical overview of their disease....Simplifies a complex and confusing disease for the general reader....It is a reliable and practical guide for the patient who has accepted his/her diagnosis and is ready to fight the disease.--The Journal of Rheumatology

Great reference book!

I have tried several books on Lupus and Dr. Wallace is definitely the gold standard in understanding the disease. This book is the only one I use now (besides a textbook). It's really easy to understand and Dr. Wallace covers aspects of the disease other books fail to cover.

Straight to the point. If you're reading this review either you or someone you love dearly have Lupus.

This handbook must be in the shelves and minds of those who confront this disease daily; not only because it explains how the body reacts to the disease, but also helps in the recognition of symptoms and bring awareness to the multiple signs of alert that one must know to react to an organ attack.

Some of the chapters are somewhat complex to the layman, but Dr. Wallace tries to make everything accessible with drawings, reference tables and extremely useful "summing up" most important point section.

Each body part that might be affected by SLE (in Portugal LES) has a separate chapter, also detailed are the ways medication work and their side effects (short and long term).

Other interesting sections are the explanation of lab test terminology, and what they mean.

The lifestyle, limitations and how to cope with the disease are also important for all to know. Can a SLE patient have a baby? Is it hereditary? What kind of protection should a patient use against the sun rays? Why is it an important alarm signal a medicated Lupus patient having high fever? Does it severely limit life expectancy? Those questions and many, many more are answered in a clear way, without evasives, but with a positive attitude.

Are you adding this book to the cart? You should.

You Need This Book--Author of Diary of A Sick Chick

If you or someone you love has lupus, I think that this book should be on your nightstand. It's on mine in the hardcopy AND I have it on my Kindle. It is THE book for lupus patients. For those stating that the book is quite technical...it does have it's moments but please don't think that you need a Bachelor's degree to understand it. I don't and I understood it just fine.

I notice that when it comes to writing books of this subject matter, some books are criticized for being too easy to understand, while others are criticized that they are too technical. One could say that this book has enough information for a beginner to understand as well as information for those who are looking for more technical information.

If you have lupus, this should be the first book that you buy. I don't agree with everything Dr. Wallace says on the topic but it is a great starting place and I highly recommend it.
