How to Build Speaker Enclosures 8th edition 1972 144 pages [Paperback] by Alexis Badmaieff
This informative book on speaker building is primarily written to address the enclosures, but has valid information in regard to some Good designs that includes basic speaker information for added clairity for the reader. As given in the description it is a thorough, comprehensive handling of much of the theoretical information of constructing high-quality, top-performance speaker enclosures. This book does cover the advantages and disadvantages of several enclosure types and includes discussions on speaker drivers and crossover networks. After going through the chapters, (8), Speaker Enclosure discussions came first and then the drivers and how they are utilized in the enclosures, driver numbers and the matching of the enclosures. There is a good explanation concerning efficiencies of drivers, balance importance, multiple arrays of speakers and phasing of woofer, midrange and tweeters. Enclosure baffles is discussed in detail in Chapter three comparing three systems for explation of differnt uses. Bass Reflex or Phase Inversin Enclosures, Horn enclosures and the combination of enclosures follow in the next Three Chapters. There follows a thorough discussion of crossovers networks, picking the crossover frequencies, phase shifts, crossover rates, electronic crossovers, network configurations, equalizers and shelving. The final chapter discusses testing and materials of design, regidity, and speaker placement and phasing of stereo speakers is discussed in Summary. This is an older book on the design of Stereo systems, but the theory is still sound and can give a lot of good information to the reader to design and understand building of Speakers. I recommend this book. An easy read compared to those books from some of the newer authorities on the subject.

Do you know an input from an output?

This is a book by professionals for those with an aptitude for science, electronics and mathematics, or for those with some experience in loudspeaker design and construction. From the get-go, the reader is immersed in such audio terms as chokes, wavelength, cone excursion, frequency response, acoustical power, distortion, crossovers, phasing, decibel and equalization. Some explanations are technical involving mathematics. The newcomer will be lost. The beginner would require far more support to actually design, construct and test a loudspeaker system. Block diagrams for setting up testing equipment, and how to use them is beyond the person who doesn't know an input from an output.

Knowledgeable readers, however, will feel at home in a review of the 5 major types of box loudspeakers (1) finite baffle (2) infinite baffle (3) bass reflex (4) horn projectors and (5) combinations of those. There are many construction drawings with measurements of various types of loudspeaker designs and a chapter on woodworking. There are schematics, circuit diagrams and block diagrams. The book is for those who want to know the scientific principles behind loudspeaker enclosures. This will benefit the experienced builder. The authors were highly regarded audio engineers in the 1960's. Not what I was expecting

This book heavily emphasis the importance of planning what you will say so that it is unemotional and making a clear ask. Then it provides sample scripts for everything from negotiating a contract renewal, to getting a raise, to breaking bad news of a national tragedy to a child to negotiating a lease with an exclusive club.

The general strategy of all of these is to start with flattery, or at least, build common ground, then move on to state the problem in a bizarrely positive way, vaguely imply that you'll quit (or whatever consequence there is for a failure to a negotiated agreement) then state exactly what you want.

Two nuggets I found interesting:

(1) If you are in contract renewals and the client wants to lower prices, go the other way. Offer to match the current rates but at a lower amount of service, and, to keep the same amount of service, increase rates 10-15%. Then make your case, preferably in writing, for why you are going up - more traffic on the website, more people coming into the ballpark last season, etc - some numeric reason the work is more valuable.

(2) If you give a range for negotiation, expect your counterpart to go down, starting at the bottom of the range. So if you say "$50,000 to $40,000 per year", expect the other person to start out at $40,000 - OR LESS. Better to start at the top end of the range, establishing that as a negotiating target, and end up at $45! (This has not been my experience, by the way; my experience would be with a range like that, get an offer at $40 to $41K, possibly $42. But I pick my clients carefully. The important thing to learn here, which I agree with, is the client will think $42K is MORE than you asked for, that they are being generous.)

Sadly, there were not a ton more nuggets here.

Overall: If you've never read a book on negotiation, this gives you some interesting scripts, but it doesn't really explore why they might work - or not. If that's what you'd like, I'd suggest a combination of Brian Tracy and Oren Klaff. The McGraw hill 36 hour negotiation course, though out of print, is fantastic for providing negotiation strategies.

Note: This review is for the audio book, but I believe the content is the same. The audio was a bit ... dry, but I'd say it was just about average for an audio business book.

The Most Brilliant Introduction to Economics: How to Think about it, not What to think about it.

This is the best possible introduction to economics I have come across and I have been studying economics and practicing it for 50 years. I especially like the fact that he gives a brief outline of modern economic history, grounding the book in reality. I also like that he summarized 9 different fundamental approaches to economics so breaking the grip of current orthodoxy. He suggests what each approach (Neo Classical, Keynesian, Austrian, Institutional, Behavioral, Schumpeterian etc is useful for and what its limitations are. Once you know there is more than one economics you gain immediately in ability to navigate the subject. He does what he says: teaches you how to think about economics not what to think. Also this is brilliantly written and very gripping. I give it to anyone of my friend's children who go to university to study the subject. This is actually a gift copy for one of them,

For the subject matter it covers, this book is a surprisingly easy read. The author makes relatable and often humorous reference in order to strengthen the reader's understanding of potentially complicated concepts. An excellent introduction to the "science" of economics.

informative introduction to North Korea through its capital

This is a remarkably well-written book works on both the level of a pictorial city guide and as political geography. The North Korean capital of Pyongyang was effectively flattened during the Korean War (1950-53) and its rebuilding reflected a series of political choices from what sorts of activities to locate in the capital to what kind of architectural design, materials, and construction techniques to employ. Springer mines this intersection of cityscape and political history beautifully, and it is hard to imagine anyone who would not learn something new from reading this book.

Pretty good book

I like this book, it came in excellent shape and within a week. It was more of a tourist picture book; it didn't actually have much information about life in Pyongyang, just pictures and explanations. But overall it was a pretty good book.
