This text is designed to remedy that need by supplying graduate engineering students (especially electrical engineering) with a course in the basic theory of complex variables, which in turn is essential to the understanding of transform theory. Presupposing a good knowledge of calculus, the book deals lucidly and rigorously with important mathematical concepts, striking an ideal balance between purely mathematical treatments that are too general for the engineer, and books of applied engineering which may fail to stress significant mathematical ideas.
The text is divided into two basic parts: The first part (Chapters 1–7) is devoted to the theory of complex variables and begins with an outline of the structure of system analysis and an explanation of basic mathematical and engineering terms. Chapter 2 treats the foundation of the theory of a complex variable, centered around the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The next three chapters — conformal mapping, complex integration, and infinite series — lead up to a particularly important chapter on multivalued functions, explaining the concepts of stability, branch points, and riemann surfaces. Numerous diagrams illustrate the physical applications of the mathematical concepts involved.
The second part (Chapters 8–16) covers Fourier and Laplace transform theory and some of its applications in engineering, beginning with a chapter on real integrals. Three important chapters follow on the Fourier integral, the Laplace integral (one-sided and two-sided) and convolution integrals. After a chapter on additional properties of the Laplace integral, the book ends with four chapters (13–16) on the application of transform theory to the solution of ordinary linear integrodifferential equations with constant coefficients, impulse functions, periodic functions, and the increasingly important Z transform.
Dr. LePage's book is unique in its coverage of an unusually broad range of topics difficult to find in a single volume, while at the same time stressing fundamental concepts, careful attention to details and correct use of terminology. Good material for a self-study, ok as a reference

This book makes an excellent guide for self-study on the subject. It is very detailed, deliberate and self-contained.

Even though Laplace transform is in the title, he doesn't get to that until chapter 10, since there is a great deal of background material he covers to get there. The book may be better titled "Everything you need to know to use Laplace transforms", since it is more background than actual material about Laplace transforms.

He doesn't provide much in the way of look-up tables of Laplace transforms, which I thought was kind of strange. He states that you can compute them yourself once you have learned all the material in the book... true, but I would still have liked tables.

If you are a grad student doing anything with Laplace transforms, and you are not in mathematics, this is a good, cheap book to get. It explains many of the essential proofs and theorems in ways non-mathematicians can understand (or at least it did for me). He has lots of figures, which I like (why do math books never have figures?)

You'll learn it well from this gem of a book

In 1962 I had a course which was supposed to teach me this mathematics. I passed, but it failed. I really didn't understand these topics well enough to apply them. Two years later, in my first year of graduate school in electrical engineering, I had a mandatory course that used this textbook. That time I really understood what this math was about, how to use it, and how to build on it. Part of that was due to good teaching, but a major part was due directly to this book.

This textbook is a gem, a brilliantly and clearly written text on an area of mathematics that is highly important to more than a few areas of engineering. My office mate of many years ago liked it so much that he took my copy and never returned it. I'm about to buy it again (in paperback this time) because I've forgotten some topics that I need to restudy. I know LePage will teach me well once again.

Excellent and practical text for complex analysis and transform theory

This is one of my all time favorite math books.

Transform theory is covered as rigorously as can be done without introducing measure theory. The level of detail used makes application of the subject much easier since the restrictions about where and how the mathematics can be applied are clear.

While providing some of the fundamentals and details that one wouldn't necessarily have time to cover in an engineering course, this text is still very accessible. With only self study from this text I learned complex variables, Fourier transform theory, and Laplace transform theory using this book (in between first and second year engineering terms). Later when we covered this in school I repeatedly referred to this text instead of my course text (despite that one also being excellent).

This series just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait for the next one, and happily, there is a next one. I love it.

'Rogue' is the third book in the Wolves of Angels Rest series by Elsa Jade as well as the fifteenth book in the multi-author Mating Season Collection of short stand alone paranormal romances. I was given this copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Werewolf Raphael Villalobos is a seriously troubled soul. He's appeared in both of the previous books, so if you've read them, you'll already know his history, and if you haven't, there's enough background in this one that it won't feel like you've missed out. The man has given up trying and has descended into a level of bitterness for all he thinks he's lost that he's almost beyond saving. He believes he lost everything worth having when his parents were murdered by human Hunters, and because he was too young to take over from his father, the Alpha position he was destined for was taken by his uncle and now his cousin, Kane. The wolf is a very different story. It knows it has something much more important and precious waiting to be found and refuses to give up looking for his true mate. If the man won't take notice, the wolf will go it alone leaving Rafe with no idea what he does or what happens to him when he's in wolf form. His wolf won't talk to him or connect to him in any way... It's gone rogue.

Darling or more often called Dare, is the County Librarian and Clerk and she has always thought Rafe Villalobos was the sexiest thing on two legs. On four legs he's downright scary, but she wants him anyway. And when she's bitten by a rogue wolf, Rafe has no idea if it was him or the stranger being used by the hunters known as the Kingdom Guard. Dare doesn't know either as both wolves look the same, but she seizes the opportunity it offers with both hands and refuses to let go until the Mating Moon has set....

I love all the books in this series and it just keeps getting better and better with each one. Although they are written as stand alone stories complete with action, steamy bits and a HEA, the characters continue to grow through the books and new ones are added against the background of the continuing conflict between the Mesa Diablo pack and the hunters, with each new twist in the story adding an extra dimension that keeps me coming back for more. If you haven't read the previous books, don't worry, but you're missing out on a great series. I can't wait for the next one.

The Librarian and the Rogue

Rafael Villalobos' black wolf is MIA. But when a foreign black wolf attacks Darling, the county librarian, Rafe's wolf rises to defend her. "Dare" is bitten by one of the black wolves, but which one? The intruder, who then tried to drag her into the woods? Or Rafe, who pulled her out of the way as the intruder struck? They may never be sure, since Rafe's wolf refuses to talk to him. Their only solution to stopping the intruder from completing the mating with her is for Rafe to preemptively mate with her. But unless Rafe' s wolf returns before the mating season ends, their mating won't 'take' and Rafe will fall to an outdated pack law that says rogues must be put down for the safety of the pack. And his wolf is showing no signs of coming back.

I received this as an ARC for an honest review
Rafael Villalobos is a werewolf whose wolf has gone rogue…which is a death sentence for him if his pack finds out. He has no one to blame but himself for this because he has always chosen to be a more or less lone wolf, not listening when his wolf told him to look for his mate. Fear of losing another person close to him has kept him on the fringes of his pack and life. Darling Rowan has known Rafe for a very long time, she has had a crush on him , but has never acted on it. One night while in her yard, Darling catches a glimpse of a black wolf…she immediately believes it to be Rafe…and she leaves her yard to confront him. She is bitten by the wolf when she decides not to play the silly games Rafe likes to put her through. Although this time, there is also another black wolf…now she is not so sure the one who bit her was Rafe after all. The two wolves fight and in the end, it is Rafe who comes to her after all. He is upset about the bite because neither of them is sure who did the biting. Rafe feels it may be a rogue…and not his rogue….who is trying to force a mate bond. Darling tells him she wants him to bite her just in case, she does not want to be mated to a stranger. Rafe knows it is the only way to break the bond, but he worries about his rogue status. When he tells Darling about it, she gives him the ok to do it. But now the question is, who or what is the rogue and what does it want ?? As the moon becomes full and Darling transforms, Rafe has mixed feelings. He still cannot reach his wolf and he knowa the end is coming for him. But nothing transpires the way he figured it would and he takes drastic and quite possibly deadly actions for himself to save Darling and his pack. Will Rafe live through his decisions or will they ultimately take its toll…and what will happen with Darling if he succumbs ??

Wonderful Resource!

I am new to Reiki, having a million and one questions about the healing energy and how to use it. My main focus is helping animals with Reiki, but this book is a wonderful resource, filled with information that helps you understand Reiki, understand the attunements, and gives you lots of information about practicing Reiki. I enjoyed the additional uses information, such as giving Reiki to your plants, trees, appliances, and lots of other things. I plan on trying some of these additional uses along with practicing Reiki on myself and family and friends. If you are looking for a great resource, then get this book! You will not be disappointed.

About the Author

Iqbal Husain is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Akron in Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University. Dr. Husain is the founder of the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Program at the University of Akron, which encompasses graduate and undergraduate courses, research on electric drives for electric and hybrid vehicles, and collegiate-level competitions on alternative vehicles. An IEEE Fellow, he is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award, the IEEE-IAS Outstanding Young Member award, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award, and the Society of Automotive Engineers Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award.

Solid on Fundamentals

Dr. Husain is an Electrical Engineer, therefore his book focuses primarily on the electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic & electromechanical aspects of EV & HEV vehicle design. From this perspective, his book is very solid on fundamental EV & HEV design considerations and component analyses. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT)... including planetary gearsets (used in CVTs to combine/split torque) is a key HEV component. Consequently, I view omitting their discussion as dissapointing. On the other hand, Dr. Husain's text is very well written/edited and his style of explaining technical details is conversational, yet professional. I recommend this book without hessitation.

This book is very hard to follow. The author presents examples (and sometimes answers) without outlining how to solve the problems. This is very frustrating! Most of the work in the book is calculus-based which would not be a problem if the steps for deriving the equations were more explicit. The information is very theoretical with little practical relevance to electric car design. The author starts out by explaining generic vehicle mechanics and then jumps right into battery chemistry and motors. Very little effort is spent on the interrelationships between these elements. The author does a decent job describing motor fundamentals, but he does not spend much time discussing the practical limitations of the technology. The hybrid discussion is relegated to the last chapter of the book, and then only a few pages are devoted to explaining this technology. Most of the chapter is spent describing various thermodynamic cycles such as the Otto cycle and Rankine cycle. Curiously,at this point the author resorts to a very high level discussion of these cycles, using very little math to show the effects of the electric motor on the function and efficiency of the traditional ICE vehicle.

Book is great, but I do not like kindle version. I was hoping that I could print partial parts of the book.

If you are a student, buy regular book since you won't be able to print anything...not even one page. I was hoping to print out pages with formulas, graphs, etc.

Great resource for restoring and repairing phonographs

I think you will find this an awesome book, as long as you know what to expect. Reiss focuses on external horn machines, and includes only a couple of pictures of the internal horn machines. If you are looking for a book with lots of details about Victrola models, this is not it.

That's not a problem if you are looking for repair information, since most wind-up machines share the same basic construction. Reiss is a great technical writer, giving you step-by-step instructions in nice readable English. He covers both mechanical repairs (such as rebuilding the reproducer or fixing a broken spring) and cosmetic repairs. I really liked his tips for cleaning the finish and repairing blemishes and dings.

In summary, if you own a talking machine and want to fix it or spruce it up, this book is a critical resource. If you are shopping for a Victrola, this is not the book for you. I take that back. I would have shopped much more intelligently for my first Victrola if I had read this book first. Just changed the rating from 4 to 5!

Own a Spring-motor Phonograph? GET THIS BOOK!

I purchased this book on recommendation from a Victor collector after getting a 1924 Victrola in (as I learned in this book!) better shape than I thought. The first 120 pages are the "Repair and Restoration" section, and Mr Reiss is true to his promise: the book is both thoroughly technical for the expert mechanic, yet completely understandable to the first-time Victrola owner. Clear and straight-forward troubleshooting, tool lists, technique walk-throughs, and detailed photos/diagrams make all the difference. I have made several minor adjustments and repairs using this book, and am now confident I can tackle the (scary for a novice) task of replacing the gaskets and diaphragm on the reproducer.

As to the warning above, Mr Reiss expects that you have at least a functionally equipped workbench and some mechanical aptitude Some of the major repairs and overhaul work require tools like a bench vise or a drill press, while other, more delicate operations need tiny screwdrivers and a jewelers loupe.

The second half of the book covers the "Identification and Price Guide" portion. The identification section has a large collection of photos, along with historical data, and even a chapter on how to avoid fakes. There is also a guide to home recording. This edition was printed in 2003, so the pricing estimates are not current, but the Model and date listing is still useful.
