Good for someone new to foreign languages

I used this text in an independent study course, and found that while it taught me basic grammar principles, it was confusing as it didn't use the traditional names for these principles. For example, subjunctive forms were called "non-factual." It explained what a noun, verb, sentence, and independent clause were. This is most helpful for someone who has never learned a foreign language before, but for someone who has a solid grounding in grammar, this book is a bit too simple.

A valuable addition to the library of any serious student of German!

"Reading German" is a surprisingly well-structured reading course that has its place both in the classroom and in the library of self-learners. The course contains authentic texts of increasing difficulty drawn from various sources. The accompanying explanations refer the reader to a separate, very well-developed, grammar section that, alone, is worth the price of the book! Although the course is fully-developed and includes translations of the German texts, most learners will find themselves diving into their dictionaries. In my view, this course is appropriate for learners who have achieved a basic-to-intermediate competence in German and who wish to expand their understanding of the language through some very serious study. My congratulations to the authors!

A Meaty, yet Non-Linear Offering

I agree with April, this book is not necessarily an introductory text. It seems more of a comprehensive review or could be used to sew up the complex topics that you've never quite understood. I've read a lot of German textbooks and this one is one of the most rich in terms in raw content. Simply tons of applicable text in English/German, grammar topics coming from a slightly different angle (which is always helpful for me), and exercises. The format of the book is a little different than most language tutorials you'll come across. There are basically four main sections (1) A Reading Course - essentially concepts + associated exercises, wrapped up with 5 chapters of texts/exercises. (2) Reference Section [my favorite]- individual grammar topics which are referenced throughout the Reading Course. These can also be "cherry-picked" by the reader. (3) Further Exercises - auxiliary exercise section and (4) German-English Text Corpus - 23 excerpts (about a page a piece) of German articles, books, etc. Because of the way it references the reader to various sections, I found myself jumping around in a non-linear fashion and, as a result, came to the same supporting grammer topics from different directions in the text. Depending on your learning style, this could get annoying. No dictionary or glossary is provided, so have your pocket Langenscheidt or Harper-Collins ready. On the plus side, all exercises and German texts have corresponding English translations for them.

From rags to riches to rags

Not famished in the physical sense as one might assume from the novel's title, this story examines an individual's yearning for knowledge in two areas that were judged by many intellectuals in the early twentieth century as being mutually exclusive: hard-science and religion.

Our main character, Peer is a young lad who, deserted by his parents, is tossed about like second-hand clothing from one foster home to the next. Surprisingly Peer demonstrates a tremendous amount of resiliency in overcoming his social and economic standing. Hope comes in the form of contact with his birth father, a man of distinguished military rank and wealth, who agrees to routinely provide sufficient funds to ensure Peer's social advancement. Yet with his father's untimely death, all financial ties are cut off to him by the estate's legal heirs. However, he commits himself to the goal of education on what meager funds are available to him through his own labors, and he even invites his impoverished half-sister, Louise, to live with him in his home which is little more than a hovel. Stricken by the sudden death of Louise, Peer comes to fundamentally question the nature of God--a reconciliation which will serve as a dominant theme throughout this novel and its sequel,`The New Temple.'

Science, it must be remembered, had a revolutionary impact on the way modern man of his day (late nineteenth century, I assume) came to see the relationship between himself and the world around him. Bojer characterizes Peer's view of Church doctrine as anachronistically hollow, echoing little more than platitudes of a somber and wrathful God. Equally so, Peer comes to question the zeal many of his age attached to the new religion of empirical science, something which he believed lacked a moral compass. Peer amasses great wealth through his feats of engineering genius in the Middle East, only eventually to return to Norway to meet the love of his life, Merle, whom he marries. Bad investments, though, force him into desperation and utter poverty, due to which he feels forced to send two of his children to live with his wife's aunt. Wracked by intense headaches and loss of much of his sight, with the sympathy and support of his devoted wife, he continues on his mission to find God.

The Great Optimist

The Norwegian writer, Johan Bojer (pronounced Bo-yer) is probably best known for his 1925 novel, The Emigrants, about a family of Norwegians making their way in the desolate plains of 1880's North Dakota. This book should not be confused with Swedish writer, Vilmelm Moberg's initial volume of his epic series chronicling the history of Swedish settlers in America (which was adapted for the screen by Ingemar Bergman). Bojer's book was more personal and optimistic. Optimism, in fact, is a quality of many of Bojer's books. It was a quality of literature which fell out of favor, at least in America, after the stock market crash of 1929. However, at his peak, Bojer was lauded by many of his contemporaries including James Branch Cabell, Rabindranath Tagore, and John Galsworthy.

At the beginning of The Great Hunger, Bojer's 1918 effort, Peer Troen, a motherless, but industrious child, along with his three buddies, Klaus, Peter, and Martin, take a keel out on the fjord to fish. Although in a small row boat, they struggle to haul in a great Greenland shark. In the chaos that ensues, the shark, thrashing and wounded, manages to grab hold of Peer's arm, but Peter swiftly thrusts a knife into the beast, killing it and in turn saving Peer's limb. This scene may serve as a sort of foreshadowing for the rest of Peer's life.

Peer, much like his creator, Bojer, is raised in a series of poor foster homes in rural Norway. After his real father dies, and Peer (Holm now; he's changed his surname to his father's), feeling the need to grieve, is driven away from the funeral, he searches out his half sister, Louise, and brings her to stay with him at his flat. He is already a protector at the young age of 16. After some early misfortune, Peer is able to attend a top engineering college. It is there that he discovers his great hunger for knowledge, the call of the "steel" and the "fire", that drives him through his early career as a master engineer. After graduation, Peer forms a strong bond in both friendship and business with his old pal Klaus and his newly found step brother, Ferdinand Holm. It is Peer's great desire for knowledge, and to contribute to the advancement of mankind, that leads him to Egypt as an integral cog in the engineering of the Old Aswan Dam. But when he returns, a successful and much wealthier man, he's confronted by Langberg, an old college chum. They speak of the state of technology as it existed then. Langberg says:

"Lord! What I'd like to know is, where mankind are making for, that they're in such a hurry"

Peer replies:

"That the Nile Barage has doubled the production of corn in Egypt -- created the possibilities of life for millions of human beings -- is that nothing?"

Langberg follows:

"My good fellow, do you really think there aren't enough fools on this earth already. Have we too little wailing and misery and discontent and class hatred as it is? Why must we go about to double it?"

It takes a while, but Peer comes to understand Langberg's pre-humanistic philosophy. He marries, has three children, and flourishes on a large farm. But soon the sirens of the steel and fire are calling to him again. Then in a series of questionable decisions, he crashes, losing everything; the shark of his boyhood is back in the boat. That Peer never loses sight of his "great hunger" when that shark latches on again, but rather adapts to it and moves spiritually onward and upward, is testament to the optimistic view taken by the author; a view that had fallen out of favor in his day; a view we would do well to hold in a nobler esteem during these volatile times.

Natasha has been teaching Russian to foreigners for over 20 years, first in Ukraine and then in the USA. She has a Bachelor's in Linguistics and a Master's Degree. Natasha attended a number of teaching trainings, conferences and seminars. Before her career as an author Natasha was a head teacher and observed countless lessons, giving feedback to the teachers about how to improve the lesson, as well to the students on how to benefit the most from the program. Natasha watched many students struggle with learning Russian via complex textbooks that present a lot of material quickly and without allowing the student time to internalize the new information. She quickly started developing her own way of presenting the materials and realized that there is a very simple way to learn any language: just by dividing something complicated into simple pieces and mastering the language step-by-step. Her many years of work and experience culminated in a book series of her own - Russian Step by Step. These books are easy to follow and, at the same time, are teaching real Russian. In RSBS books students will find dialogues from everyday life, exercises to help master those dialogues, and texts to help in remembering them. Clear grammar explanations and free audio

This is probably book number 5 in my set of Russian textbooks. I have been learning Russian on and off for the last three years and I always end up quitting when I get to the declensions. I am not young anymore and do not enjoy feeling stupid every time I open a textbook, so I was pleasantly surprised that I could follow along with these explanations.

Yes, I am not a complete beginner, but I always get stuck with cases and get them mixed up. I have been using this book for about a month an a half and I have completed 8 lessons so far. The first 6 lessons were mostly a review for me, but in lesson 7 the prepositional case was introduced - which was also a review for me, but it made a lot more sense, and I feel I've got it now. Lesson 8 covers accusative case, which was easy, but what I liked was the counting ( I can count Russian roubles like a pro now). So I am looking forward to more. If you are working with the book on your own ( like I am) - you need to make sure to read all the grammar and translations at the back of the book ( it has a special part just for that, as the main part is all in Russian). And also make many copies of the audio. I did not realize at first that the direct download was free, but Olga( their customer support) was really nice and told me it was free and explained how to get it.

So I have it in my car and at home and I listen to the lessons I have already covered, so I don't forget. I must say although the audio is rather casual, it is very clear and they use a lot of people on it. It sounds very natural, like what I hear from my Russian friends. In my opinion it is one of the best resources for the price and I know there is another book after this one, so there is consistency and I won't have to look for another book afterwards.

The most complete self teaching method for Englih speakers (In my opinion)

This is, in my opinion, the best method for learning Russian language from scratch for English speaking people. The books are very well organized, very clear, and up to date. The collection is well synchronized and the best of all are the many practical exercises in each chapter with plenty audio back up to develop the ear and pronunciation. Russian language is a difficult language to learn, specially for English speaking people, that's why is important to have a lot of sources to go to. Instead of looking all over to get enough and clear information, one can have it with the Russian Step by Step collection. They also have a very good web site with lots of free extra information, including videos. I, myself had no problems downloading the audio.
You can tell that the authors are really passionate about their work and they have tested in real life the material. The illustrations and art work of the series is also very modern and nice to look. The important idea in these books and recordings is to go on your own pace, but learn it right from the basics.

I LOVE their audio – so natural

I am Turkish but speak English as well. I have several Russian friends and we teach each other ( russian - turkish exchange). I started with Reading Russian and now am on lesson 5 (nationalities). I LOVE their audio – so natural, big help. Use the grammar and translation in the back. So far, all the explanations are straightforward and I do not need to read a lot. I progressed further in the book but every lesson takes longer to cover. My hope is to finish this book in a year.

The gaijin observer…and participant…

…but never a “fly-jin.” This is the third book of Michael Pronko’s that I have read; the other two being Beauty and Chaos: Slices and Morsels of Tokyo Life and Tokyo's Mystery Deepens: Essays on Tokyo. Each have provided deep insights into a country I find profoundly fascinating. So when I was offered this third volume for review, I again was not disappointed; Pronko still has much of value to convey. “Gaijin” is the Japanese word for foreigner, often used disparagingly, and conveying, in part, the meaning that no foreigner can possibly understand us- we are simply that unique. After the March, 2011 earthquake, tsunami and accompanying nuclear power plant disaster at Fukushima, the foreigners fled Japan in droves, so much so that their new name become “fly-jin.” Pronko stayed – of course, in part his decision was influenced by the fact that he has a Japanese wife. He related an incident of being in a shop, and the shopkeeper simply thank him for not leaving. He said in effect: why should I, this is home.

As he approaches two decades of Japanese residency, his insights are all the more valuable since he relates the changes occurring in the Japanese (as well as himself) over that time span. For example, he has noticed a greater willingness for the Japanese to now look you in the eye, as opposed to the traditional lowered glance of deference. In terms of one of their pop-culture icons – wearing T-shirts with English sayings and expressions – they have gone from the grammatically incorrect and/or incomprehensible to the “droll and eloquent,” though the wearer still might not understand its meaning and implications. A more traditional “icon” of Japanese life and style – the futon – is also on the decline. Their maintenance and care is simply too much work. The author quotes a 2012 survey that indicates that two-thirds of Japanese now sleep in beds.

This is a collection of 41 essays, all dedicated to a particular slice of Japanese life. Many “slices” are unique to this collection; others are continuations of topics from earlier works – such as his lament about the fact that the trains do not run all night. In one essay he relates how impeccably dressed the Japanese normally are (except in summer), and how he was stopped FOUR times by the police while on his bicycle – no doubt because he was dressed, well, much as I am when I ride my bike (that is, not “impeccably”). And the police are stunned when he shows them his ID as a college professor.

Other topics include the ubiquitous dependence on cell phones, the skills involved in fitting things into tight spaces, the also ubiquity of plastic, the constant state of construction throughout the city, while life goes on, and the “symphony” of sounds that is Tokyo. He has a section of five essays on the impact of the March, 2011 earthquake as well as subsequent ones, as recently as last year. For me, he closes on a very high note, one of the major appeals of Japan: serenity. And in ways, it co-exists alongside the frenzied activities in one of the most not serene cities. I particularly liked his essays on the “nature people” of Tokyo, who provides the green patches in the concrete jungle, and the jazz clubs. Fittingly, he ends with “hanami,” the cherry blossom festival. For a few brief moments, at sunset, the entire sky is pink, a “fluke of atmosphere.” He concludes with: “The memory of that blanketing pink offered a reminder that beauty shows up on schedule, but it also arrives in swift gusts of vivid surprise.” May there be many more left. For Pronko’s third work, also 6-stars.

This is a delightful collection of essays on Japan. The author is very familiar with Japan and his writings give you an insightful look at another country. You can even see how the Japanese view other nations. What language do you speak? Some Japanese speak English very well while others prefer their native tongue. As an American you might be used by students for English practice. The essays cover varied topics including how much care is taken into their appearance. While a fascinating read because of my attention span it got a little slow from time to time. It is done well and very informative. We can certainly learn many things from other cultures.

I also helped found Japan's first bilingual jazz magazine, Jazznin and continue to publish academic articles and run a conference on teaching literature. The essays in Beauty and Chaos: Slices and Morsels of Tokyo Life were originally published in Newsweek Japan in Japanese and proved very popular.' Now he publishes them in English.

What Michael offers us in this luminous collection of essays is the opportunity to view life in Tokyo from both sides - the side we know from myth, history, literature and films and tales from fiends who have visited this fascinating city and the side as shared by the Japanese and by Michael who lives in and knows the city so well. From page one on Michael offers his own brand of insight, humor, philosophy that allows us to ee Toyko for the first time in situ: ‘The other day, for the first time, a young woman sitting on the Chuo Line train won the contest of “who will look away first.” In the past, I could always stare longer than anyone in Tokyo, but this Tokyo woman outstared me. I felt surprised, and maybe a little humiliated, that she could hold the eye contact longer than me— a Westerner! When I first came to Tokyo eighteen years ago, I felt bewildered because no one met my eyes. At the time I wondered: was something wrong with me? I felt alienated, anonymous, unseen. Shopping, teaching or walking around, it was hard to get a clear look into the heart of the city since people’s eyes quickly shuttered. Of course, I knew that in Asian countries eye contact carries vastly different meanings than in America where I’m from. In Asia— Japan especially— downcast eyes express humility and respect. But when eyelids clamped down, I felt the human side of the city was veiled and hidden from me.’

Great information and outline of social media marketing

I purchased this textbook for a social media course in the online Undergraduate Certificate in Social Media program at Central Michigan University. The authors do a fantastic job of introducing the readers to both the uses of social media, but how they relate to common marketing strategies and tactics. There is a plethora of definitions throughout the text and several anecdotes of how business have successfully, or unsuccessfully, used social media to achieve business goals.

However, I did find the tone of authors aired on the side of condescension. This is clearly written for a Gen-Y audience of undergraduate college students which, at times, feels a little insulting to new and experienced social media professionals regardless of age.

Overall, this is a very concise and informative introduction to the world of social media marketing. Too bad any text written about social media is obsolete by the time it is even published.

If you want to schedule, have this book

Good book. It is not correct to say that it discusses outdated P3. It provides, as you can tell by the very chapter title "Overview of Prevalent Software Products". This is a book about all aspects of construction scheduling, but it is definitely useful for any industry. Provides both the big picture and the small detail. Describes mechanics of algorithms used in such scheduling packages. Gives you practical approaches to everyday life with a schedule, from development through maintenance, as well as contractual issues, claims analyses and approaches to enforcement of good practices. It details e.g. new proposed schedule logic approaches (as used in Pertmaster), but then it also gives you a common sense advice on how to handle the schedule on a live project and what to require from contractor (and what is generally expected to be required from contractor). Use the parts which you need, and there are quite a few to choose from. It is not a "click-this-click-that" software jockey cookbook. It is much better than that.

Comprehensive yet dry at times

Very thorough and comprehensive information. I read this book to gain CPM knowledge to prepare for a job interview. The book gave me every bit of CPM knowledge I needed to do great in the interview and I landed the job (not only do to this book but it helped with the CPM questions I was expecting). The information is there but it can be dry and boring to read in some sections. I highly recommend this book.
