This book surveys the fundamental ideas of algebraic topology. The first part covers the fundamental group, its definition and application in the study of covering spaces. The second part turns to homology theory including cohomology, cup products, cohomology operations and topological manifolds. The final part is devoted to Homotropy theory, including basic facts about homotropy groups and applications to obstruction theory.

Pioneering text
By topoman
This book was an incredible step forward when it was written (1962-1963). Lefschetz's Algebraic Topology (Colloquium Pbns. Series, Vol 27) was the main text at the time. A large number of other good to great books on the subject have appeared since then, so a review for current readers needs to address two separate issues: its suitability as a textbook and its mathematical content.

I took the course from Mr. Spanier at Berkeley a decade after the text was written. He was a fantastic teacher - one of the two best I've ever had (the other taught nonlinear circuit theory). We did NOT use this text, except as a reference and problem source. He had pretty much abandonded the extreme abstract categorical approach by then. The notes I have follow the topical pattern of the book, but are so modified as to be essentially a different book, especially after covering spaces and the first homotopy group. His statement was that his treatment had changed since the subject had changed significantly. So much more has changed since then that I would not recommend this book as a primary text these days. Bredon's Topology and Geometry (Graduate Texts in Mathematics) is much better suited to today's student.

So, why did I give it four stars? First, notice that it splits stylewise into three segments, corresponding the treatment of its material in a three quarter academic year. The first three chapters (intro, covering spaces, polyhedral) have really not been superceded in a beginning text. Topics are covered very thoroughly, aiding the student new to the subject. The next three chapters (homology) are written much with much less explanation included - indeed, some areas leave much to the reader to discover and, consequently, aren't very helpful if the instructor doesn't fill in the details (the text expects a rather rapid mathematical maturation from the first part - too much of a ramp in my opinion), but the text is comprehensive. The last section (homotopy theory, obstruction theory and spectral sequences) should just be treated as a reference - it'd be hard to find all this material in such a compact form elsewhere and the obstruction theory section has fantastic coverage of what was known as of the writing of this book. It's way too terse for a novice to learn from and there are some great books out there these days on the material.

Excellent reference, poor textbook
By A Customer
This book is terrific as a reference for those who already know the subject, but if you teach algebraic topology it would be dangerous to use it as a graduate text (unless you're willing to supplement it extensively). The basic problem is that Spanier does not teach students how to compute effectively because his abstract, high-powered algebraic approach obscures the underlying geometry, which is not developed at all. Here I'd recommend the books by Munkres, or Greenberg; even the old-fashioned treatment of Lefschetz, with its explicit and rather cumbersome treatment of cohomology, could serve as an antidote to Spanier. Somewhere, the student has to acquire a good intuitive feeling for the geometry underlying the subject (the same can be said of algebraic geometry -- here earlier work (e.g., of the Italian school, Weil's old book on intersection theory, ...) should not be neglected entirely in favor of Grothendieck et al., for something essential is lost)
That said, if you already know the subject Spanier's book is an excellent reference. Even here, though, you'll need to provide some details toward the ends of the later chapters. Each chapter starts out relatively easily and works up to a crescendo, the treatment becoming terser and more advanced.
I give it four stars (5 for mathematical quality, 3 for usefulness as a text). The first three chapters deal with covering spaces and fibrations; the middle three with (co)homology and duality; the last three with general homotopy theory, obstruction theory, and spectral sequences. Some of Serre's classical results on finiteness theorems for homotopy groups are presented.

Wonderful humor
By hyggehygge
Embroideries is a wonderfully funny graphic novel detailing the romantic lives of women in Iran. Each woman's story spans just a few pages, but touching, amusing punchlines are delivered every time. The illustrations are lively and gestural, capturing the personalities of Marjane's family and friends. The book is very relatable. It would be a good discussion starter for a book club or a parent broaching the subject of love, romance and courtship to young women.

One of the more amusing stories is told by a woman who, after noticing that her middle aged husband was being distracted from her middle age self by twenty-something women, had plastic surgery that took fat from her behind and used it to perk up her breasts. He loves her new breasts - but in fact is kissing her rear!

Great but short.
By Amelia Bright
I love this book. It is hillarious, just like Persepolis and well drawn and written as always. The only downfall is the length... it's too short and probably a better choice to get it from the library.

Proust Was a Neuroscientist, by Jonah Lehrer

In this technology-driven age, it’s tempting to believe that science can solve every mystery. After all, science has cured countless diseases and even sent humans into space. But as Jonah Lehrer argues in this sparkling debut, science is not the only path to knowledge. In fact, when it comes to understanding the brain, art got there first.
Taking a group of artists — a painter, a poet, a chef, a composer, and a handful of novelists — Lehrer shows how each one discovered an essential truth about the mind that science is only now rediscovering. We learn, for example, how Proust first revealed the fallibility of memory; how George Eliot discovered the brain’s malleability; how the French chef Escoffier discovered umami (the fifth taste); how Czanne worked out the subtleties of vision; and how Gertrude Stein exposed the deep structure of language — a full half-century before the work of Noam Chomsky and other linguists. It’s the ultimate tale of art trumping science.
More broadly, Lehrer shows that there’s a cost to reducing everything to atoms and acronyms and genes. Measurement is not the same as understanding, and art knows this better than science does. An ingenious blend of biography, criticism, and first-rate science writing, Proust Was a Neuroscientist urges science and art to listen more closely to each other, for willing minds can combine the best of both, to brilliant effect.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Significant Seven, December 2007: Proust may have been more neurasthenic than neuroscientist, but Jonah Lehrer argues in Proust Was a Neuroscientist that he (and many of his fellow artists) made discoveries about the brain that it took science decades to catch up with (in Proust's case, that memory is a process, not a repository). Lehrer weaves back and forth between art and science in eight graceful portraits of artists (mostly writers, along with a chef, a painter, and a composer) who understood, better at times than atomizing scientists, that truth can begin with "what reality feels like." Sometimes it's the art that's most evocative in his tales, sometimes the science: Lehrer writes about them with equal ease and clarity, and with a youthful confidence that art and science, long divided, may yet be reconciled. --Tom Nissley

From Publishers Weekly
With impressively clear prose, Lehrer explores the oft-overlooked places in literary history where novelists, poets and the occasional cookbook writer predicted scientific breakthroughs with their artistic insights. The 25-year-old Columbia graduate draws from his diverse background in lab work, science writing and fine cuisine to explain how Czanne anticipated breakthroughs in the understanding of human sight, how Walt Whitman intuited the biological basis of thoughts and, in the title essay, how Proust penetrated the mysteries of memory by immersing himself in childhood recollections. Lehrer's writing peaks in the essay about Auguste Escoffier, the chef who essentially invented modern French cooking. The author's obvious zeal for the subject of food preparation leads him into enjoyable discussions of the creation of MSG and the decidedly unappetizing history of 18th- and 19th-century culinary arts. Occasionally, the science prose risks becoming exceedingly dry (as in the enthusiastic section detailing the work of Lehrer's former employer, neuroscientist Kausik Si), but the hard science is usually tempered by Lehrer's deft way with anecdote and example. Most importantly, this collection comes close to exemplifying Lehrer's stated goal of creating a unified third culture in which science and literature can co-exist as peaceful, complementary equals. 21 b&w illus. From Bookmarks Magazine
Jonah Lehrer, a Rhodes scholar working in the lab of a Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist, was participating in experiments on the nature of memory while reading Proust’s Swann’s Way. He was amazed to find that the author had predicted his scientific findings nearly a century earlier. This epiphany inspired Lehrer to reexamine other great works of art. This highly readable book generally engaged and enlightened critics; Lehrer writes competently despite his "graduate-student earnestness" (Cleveland Plain Dealer). A few critics felt that some conclusions were strained and some generalizations did a disservice to the very fields they were meant to illuminate; however, most considered Lehrer’s arguments compelling and persuasive. If not all critics bought Lehrer’s claims, his book nonetheless "marks the arrival of an important new thinker" (Los Angeles Times).

A good analysis of the modern literature.
By Edoardo Angeloni
The author is able to entry in the soul of Proust, Czanne, Withman, Eliot not only for the greatness in the art and literature, but also for their visions by a psychological point of view. In those men the strongness of their art was united to a particular study of the human life. This analysis goes in the deep levels of the mind, so we can retain this context particularly important for a knowledge of the modern times. The correlations of those different aspects is interesting, so we can see the narrow relation between the work of Leherand and his teacher, Kandel.

Art and "Science"
By Peter Shahrokh
This book is a series of essays about how the work certain artists (Walt Whitman, George Eliot, Paul Cezanne, et al.) precurse the modern findings of neuroscience. At the bottom of the books themes is the idea that art reaches the "self" of people, their character, their decision making, their essential being, while science explains what physical things are going on. Science can explain how things work, but it can't cross the line to get at how people have a sense of themselves and how their deeper emotions are expressed through paintings, music, literature, and even cuisine. It's an interesting book, but not a knockout. But thanks to it, I am better able to understand the buzz behind works by Cezanne and Virginia Woolf.

THE ARTS AND SENSES OF NEUROSCIENCE
By M. Fischlowitz
I was fascinated by the title, Proust Was a Neuroscientist, and have not been disappointed. In this, my first reading of Jonah Lehrer's work, I've become eager to find more of his writing. (As Jonah he swims deep; as Lehrer he is a true learner and teacher!).

Each of the chapters (Whitman, Escoffier, Cezanne, Stravinsky,
Gertrude Stein, Virginia Wolff, etal) brings the reader to confront the neuroscience of our several senses. While music, art, cuisine, and literature are well explored, I found myself wanting to read Lehrer's description of some fine athlete and the neuroscience of physical coordination excellence.

There are several illustrations in this book, some of which were, in their original, in color. They suffer by having been produced in black & white. Those, particularly one by Cezanne, should not have been printed.

As I read of the artistic antecedents of neurological discoveries I
could not help but wonder what light future neuroscience might shed on some of the same, and some current producers in various arts.

The Pirate Captain: Chronicles of a Legend, by Kerry Lynne

“I am Nathanael J. E. Blackthorne, the pirate captain. Please, reserve your accolades regarding me fame and conquests for another time. During the year of our lord 1753, I was sailing the West Indies, minding the oars in me own boat, pursuing me sole purpose in life: to disrupt the unholy alliance of two corrupt men, to destroy their lives as they destroyed mine. I mistakenly kidnap Catherine Mackenzie—wrong person, easy mistake, you understand—and me life went arsey-turvey. Having lost hearth and heart to the Jacobite War, and wanted for war crimes, Cate has the grit and savvy to have survived years destitute and alone in the cesspool known as London. When arrest seems imminent, Cate, through whose eyes this story is told, buys passage on the first ship away. Now, Cate desires but one thing: a place to belong. Alas, if it were only that simple. This is a story of scarred and blinded people. It’s the story of trust, or rather, the lack of. It’s the story of loss of faith and the disbelief that Providence might ever smile again. Have you the courage to join us?”

Review
"The Pirate Captain unfolds in visual images rather than being just words on the page. While a thread of romance runs through this tale, The Pirate Captain is not a romance. It's a gritty novel of piracy and the sea that's realistically told in such a way that transports the reader back in time." -Pirates and Privateers,Cindy Vallor

A Diamond in the Treasure Trove"The Pirate Captain bears many resemblances to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series that I would almost call it "Outlander: the Pirate edition.- Romantic Historical Review, Goodreads,Emery Lee

About the Author

"Kerry Lynne was a history major in college and went into teaching. Then she wound up in the decorative painting world, where she traveled, taught and published for some 30 years. And then her hand wouldn't work. So she went back to what she knew: writing, history and sailing." Lynne's fictional writing achievements includes The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend (Nor Silver), 2014 Next Generation Indie Book Finalist Award for Historical Fiction (first novel) and a short story publication in LocoThology #3-The Price of Victory (deleted scene from The Pirate Captain, Nor Silver). The second book in The Pirate Captain series "Nor Gold" was released in 2014 which continues the legend of Captain Blackthorne.

Gone with the Pirates
By T. Edmund
Wow, OK, so where do I begin with this book? I guess I'll start with the best description I can muster: A Mils & Boon romance set on a pirate ship (apparently this has been done before despite being second only in unlikeliness to Dinosaur erotica) stretched to more than 600 pages through endless mind numbing information dumps about sailing and 'character development'

The first warning I was reading a book I probably should have put down, was the beginning chapter being in pure 'pirate' with so much copious boat-speak I found myself balking before the story even started. Luckily from chapter two onward the prose is somewhat ordinary, however there was a constant jarring bounce between forced lingo and plain language that I constantly found myself thrown out of the story.

Such as the story was - the entire first part is devoted to our main characters Cate and Nathan (honestly couldn't Lynne have picked names at least a little nautical sounding) running away from each other while somehow sharing the Captain's cabin at night (a curtain apparently is all needed.)

The second and third parts pick up slightly with more action, although almost every fight is depicted by our main character Cate fretting about Nathan's wellbeing. without actually getting to see much of whats going on (which generally wasn't much). Unless you're actually drawn into the romance of Nathan and Cate, there really is little tension to carry the novel, the book reads more as a series of piratey experiences of Cate while Nathan avoid each other.

SPOILER ALERT
The worst thing about this book is after 600 pages of dithering and finally getting some resolution the plot is thrown pointlessly into the need for a sequel, I honesty would have preferred an unhappy conclusion to the threat of another book.

You really need to read these books!
By Carol B.
I found this after reading Gabaldon's last book as someone had told me they had similar writing styles. Kerry didn't disappoint! These are well written and very detailed. And it has something for everyone! Historical fiction, romance and sailing! Having never sailed, I found her writing interesting but not too technical. And seeing the ships through the heroine's eyes is beautifully done.

this is the most wonderful series I've ever read
By Susan Freeze Jennings
This is Book #1 of The Pirate Captain, Chronicles of a Legend. Briefly, this is the most wonderful series I've ever read, bar none. A fabulous story, exceptionally well written, a cast of beautifully portrayed characters with laughing, crying, suffering, fighting, loving, and living the time of their lives! I can't say enough to describe my feelings in this regard. I'd buy it again and again. I am re-reading every single word I have loved since picking this book up. Buy it.....you'll never regret it!
