I want those hours of my life back....

I don't understand how the author of this book is a Sunday Times Best Selling Author. This is the first book I've read by Ms. Lewis and based on how poorly written it is, how unnecessarily long it is, how terrible the characters are, this is also the last book I will read by Ms. Lewis.

For one, the style of writing is riddled with clich�s. Sentences are awkwardly worded, dialogue is a disaster. And by disaster, I mean everyone speaks in exactly the same way. Everyone speaks like no real person would speak. While I was reading, I could not believe the book was written by anyone other than a novice. That's how bad the writing was.

Then the characters. There's a group of friends in the book: Nikki, Spencer, Kristin, David, and Danny. Of the three boys, during the span of over 500 pages, I could not find any action, or personality to differentiate between them. They speak the same way and react the same way. If one was so inclined, it would be unrecognizable if every time Danny said something, you changed Danny's name to David. Or Spencer. Or Kristin. You get the picture.
There is no characterization. Who are these people? Why should we care about them? Why do they do the things they do? None of these questions are answered. To be fair, we do get background stories for each character. But really, what happened to meeting the characters?

Moving on to the main character, Nikki. The entire premise of the story revolves around her getting pregnant at 21 and the wonderful bond she shares with her son. Again, really? A girl gets pregnant at 21 by accident, and her entire life gets disrupted, and her parents are unsupportive... and she is exuberant. Why? As an 18-year-old girl, I can honestly say that if I was unexpectedly pregnant, I would be terrified. How can someone not be? And I'm not saying that she can't be happy about the pregnancy; I'm saying why, as the reader, am I not made to understand her joy?

Which brings me to Nikki's general reaction to everything that happens to her. I can understand suspending belief, but nothing that Nikki does is believable. (SPOILERS) Her son dies, and she finds out that her father is the one that killed him and what does Nikki do? She takes the fall for it. Even after spending over 500 pages with Nikki, I didn't get anything she did.

More SPOILERS:

Moving on to plot. The author tries, and fails, to string together a series of incredibly unbelievable plot lines. Nikki's son Zach has Tay Sachs disease. A disease I might add that is prevalent in the Jewish population. Here's the thing, though, Nikki isn't Jewish and neither is her boyfriend. BUT, in like less than five pages, we find out Nikki's dad isn't really her dad. And that the guy she thought was her dad actually killed her biological, and Jewish, dad. Confusing, right? I believe Ms. Lewis was trying to be clever when she sprung this out of the blue on us. Yeah, Ms. Lewis, you would have been clever if the way you'd revealed this minor detail was even slightly plausible.

It should be obvious by now that I hated this book. The only reason I even bothered to finish the mess of a thing was because I was on a sixteen-hour flight and had nothing else to read. There were some potentially awesome plot lines but the author failed to use them. In the hands of a more accomplished writer, this book could have been a masterpiece. Not the waste of time it was.

Excellent Story about family and subterfuge and business as well. I was so involved in all their lives.

Value can be created anywhere.

The lean movement is new, but value creation is as essential to the human experience as consuming or learning. We all do it. Our businesses do it.

However, somewhere along the line, as firms scale, they tend to lose their mojo. The markets shift. Their teams get too big. They stop rewarding failure. And their pace of innovation grinds to a halt.

These organizations need a hand. A book. A handbook. This handbook.

Why? Because it is thoroughly prescriptive.

Skunkworks, intrapreneurship, innovation labs and innovation colonies breed innovation. Innovation requires funding. Funding is contingent upon metrics. Metrics are tied to accounting. This process begets success, but then what?

How should compensation work? Answered in this book.

Where does vision fit in? Answered in this book.

What is the Lean Enterprise process? Answered in this book.

Most importantly, multiple paths to innovation are explored: incubation, acquisition, investment, etc. Options for new value creation abound.

Bring Lean Startup Principles to Your Company

The Lean Enterprise answers the question, "How can I drive corporate innovation by instilling the lean startup ethos in my organization?" The book answers this question incredibly well by advising executives to set up an innovation colony with the following conditions:
1. physical, financial, & organizational autonomy
2. equity incentives for employees as a trade-off for lower base compensation and the high risk of job loss
3. Access to a large pool of potential projects

At first, I really struggled with the authors' premise on two levels. First, I did not feel that companies would agree to the autonomy conditions. Second, I did not feel that many "regular" employees would agree to the high-risk, high-reward trade-off. However, it eventually dawned on me that the book is geared toward companies that do not want to lose the tiny but extremely valuable set of employees who would otherwise leave to start their own companies. If that keeps you up at night, this book is for you.

I appreciated the case studies sprinkled throughout the book. As far as I could tell, none of the companies individually featured applied ALL of the authors' lessons. However, collectively they did and I think it is reasonable that the authors put a stake in the ground for what the ideal innovation colony looks like.

Beyond that, you get a good survey of:
a. lean startup principles: disruptive ideas, small cross-functional teams, customer development, minimum viable product, rapid experimentation, pivot or persevere decision making based premeditated success criteria, etc.
b. entrepreneurial financing and venture-capital accounting
c. innovation accounting (i.e. focus on metrics that matter)

The book also does a good job of exploring different corporate innovation strategies including: incubating internally; acquiring early; and investing.

Finally, the book does a good job of giving credit to Eric Ries for the principles he popularized in his 2011 book. However, I would have like to have seen credit given to Steve Blank and Bob Dorf who kicked the whole thing off in 2005 with their exceptionally valuable but admittedly textbook like "4 Steps to the Epiphany."

Must read for Chief Innovation Officers

The most comprehensive work on the subject of applying Lean Startup methodology to large corporations to date. It covers a range of practical tactics for lean teams to investment approaches while keeping a consistent overall narrative.

This is not a typical coma inducing business books. It keeps you engaged to the last sentence. It's one of the most enjoyable business books I've read.

In addition to providing a great overview of different approaches, it's packed with the best interviews on the subject so far. The authors don't skimp and include interviews people who disagree with parts of their main innovation colony thesis.

It stays at a fairly high level, best suited to Innovation Officers and C-level execs. If you're a PM, team member, or accelerator manager looking for something about dealing with culture change and how to lead lean teams, you'll have to go back to Jeffrey Liker's The Toyota Way to Lean Leadership.

Overall, Lean Enterprise is a book that all large companies should steal liberally from when considering their strategy for innovation.

Not worth it...

This guide is kind of trash... sorry, I hate to be so negative in such a cute games strategy book but I'd like to save people some money from buying this. It doesnt even have semi useful stuff like relationship Likes or sell prices or fish locations... anything. It reads more like a wikipedia entry with bare minimum effort.

Save your money! This isnt even good if you put it in the recycler, it turns into clay.

For expert and layman alike

Fuller's excellent work does a good job of making the complexities of Hinduism comprehensible even to a non-expert--not an easy task. The Hindu religion is of course not an institution in the Western sense, but rather a collection of beliefs and practices, ever-changing, in many cases highly local, and bewildering to the Western monotheistic mind with its "330 million" gods. Its complexities both drive and result from the infinite complexities of Indian society itself, and an understanding of Hinduism is crucial for any understanding of the country. I read the book in preparation for my second trip to India, and it made the experience infinitely more enjoyable and understandable.
Fuller's explanation of the principle of "hierarchy" as the underpinning for both Hinduism and Indian society as a whole was very enlightening, as one realizes that it is completely antithetical to Western thought which values individual freedom above all else. Particularly good is the description of the structure of Hindu worship, or "puja," which despite its infinite variations Fuller contends consists of 16 (more or less) steps, of offerings and services to the deity. The description of the caste system, which bears almost no relationship to the Western notion of class, is excellent. Fuller's explanation of the concept of purity, and how it drives the status and treatment of women, is also very good.
More casual readers may feel a bit bogged down as later chapters explore more esoteric subjects such as devotionalism and village rituals. From a scholarly point of view, I'd say this book is at the college text level, and like college texts it gets more complex as you work your way through. But this work is more than worth it even if you focus on the first few chapters. Highly recommended!

Filling the gap

Fuller provides an up-to-date presentation of the popular practice of Hinduism in India. Using ethnographic data and personal field research in a Minakshi temple in south India, Fuller provides a window into daily worship unladen with ancient textual scriptures and controversial philosophies, however, giving careful representation of the traditional, and mainly centralist, view of Hinduism as a point of reference. Fuller presents the basic why's of Hindu practice in an easy-to-follow format and language throughout the text. Beginning with an anthropological account of Hindu society in India, he continues with chapters on gods and goddesses, worship, sacrifice, rituals, devotion, pilgrimage, and misfortune, giving special attention to women's issues in the second chapter on devotion. I found this work extremely helpful in understanding the practical application of many previous works' attention to the Vedic texts and philosophies. A work of this subject and caliber had been lacking in Hindu scholarship until this book.

About the Author
Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida. Known as “Hollywood's favorite photographer,” the L.A.-based contemporary artist and filmmaker has evolved from the “bad boy of photography” with his controversial blood-stained photographic series featuring Lindsay Lohan to a more mature artist whose work explores the collective gaze, power structures, hyper-realism, and cinematographic practice. He has worked with a roster of ranking members of Hollywood. Tyler's previous book is The Dirty Side of Glamour (It Books, 2011). Shields resides in Los Angeles, California.

Andrea Blanch is an award-winning fashion, fine art, and conceptual photographer. Referred to as "the woman who knows how to capture a woman," her work has been published in G.Q, Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, the New York Times, Esquire, and Rolling Stone. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of Mus�e Magazine. Blanch currently teaches at the International Center for Photography. She lives in New York City.

Nathan Fillion is a Canadian actor who is best known for his role as Richard Castle on the ABC series Castle, as well as his earlier portrayal as the fan favorite Captain Malcom Reynolds in the Joss Whedon series Firefly. In the view of Athanasius Kircher, for instance, the sunflower clock was not merely a hoax, but an effort to demonstrate, however fraudulently, his truly held belief that the ability of a flower to follow the sun was due to the same cosmic magnetic influence as that which moved the planets and caused the rotation of the earth. The marvels revealed in this work raise and answer questions about the connections between natural science and natural magic, the meaning of demonstration, the role of language and the senses in science, and the connections among art, music, literature, and natural science.

"They do not merely follow theory; often they determine theory, because instruments determine what is possible, and what is possible determines to a large extent what can be thought." The "natural magic" of inventors such as Father Francis Linus and Athanasius Kircher introduced their contemporaries to the notion that with the proper tools nearly any advance in science was possible. And those who came after them made great advances indeed, from the 18th-century Aeolian harp, from which came the belief that light could be bent to produce sound, to automated weather stations, telestereoscopes, and early phonographs. What Doesn't Kill You

I'm pretending hunkosaurus Franco didn't write this. Moving on.

This is the stuff of every Creative Writing class you took as an undergrad. It's all Holden Caulfield crabby and Bret Easton Ellis name-droppy; gruesome with those obnoxious one-liner sentences that are meant to be profound in their brevity. The racial issues are slapped on strangely, and the tone is mushy oatmeal bland. "Killing Animals" was worth reading, but even then, it feels like Ellis fan fiction.

Now I'm pretending Franco did write them. Look my man, you have many rich and successful friends. Many of whom are writers who like you because you're a cool dude. You're also a hunk. This is working against you. If my mom wrote a book called "imma Real Gud Mama", I'd tell her she was the next Faulkner.

Get some unbiased advice, sweetheart. And call me.

Franco is unique, but in a totally typical way

James Franco does not want to be considered an actor. He wants to be considered a polymath and an "artist." He is enrolled in something like six highly prestigious graduate programs, including one for filmmaking, one for fiction, one for poetry, one for design, one for creative writing, and a couple for English literature. You would think this would qualify him to write a book.

But there's a problem. The planet's brightest students have to crawl over broken glass to complete one of these graduate programs. How is it possible that Franco can do six at the same time? There are several possibilities. Maybe Franco really is the second coming of Leonardo da Vinci. But here's a line from one of his short stories: "The building is beige, but the shadows make it shadow-color." So maybe not.

It's more likely that Franco is riding some sort of grotesque wave of snowballing prestige, one that attempts to shield him from his quite evident averageness. It's been said that his classmates feel protective of him. In other words, they like him, they're charmed by him, they're pleased to have him in their midst, and they want to shield him from the fact that he's in a million miles over his head.

Franco is unique, but in a totally typical way. He is the cartoonish example of the high-achieving young person who takes 15 AP classes and does 20 extracurriculars in order to look impressive and gain status and admission and acceptance. But it isn't possible to do that many things with any sort of skill or competence. The result is a book that is so vapid and soulless and contrived as to be hard to look at.

Fish Bowl now

I came across the title PALO ALTO and thought it interesting since I reluctantly moved there as an early teenager and thankfully got out of there as soon as I graduated high school. When I realized it was written by James Franco, who, personally, I don't like or dislike, I was looking forward to a good read. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good read. It wasn't even an ok read. It was the same character pretending to be different characters telling different stories with the same tone and same language. It got quite boring and pointless after the 4th story. The only intriguing thing to me was that there was a lot of name dropping of places and streets in and around Palo Alto. Oh yeah, I remember the Bat Cave! Though I thought it was "The Path" where you could sneak a smoke (and catch your teacher too). I'm just a few years older than Franco and I certainly didn't experience teenage debauchery to this extent.

Palo Alto is a super wealthy and super conservative suburb full of doctors and Stanford professors. Most of the houses are enormous and expensive, half the cars are Mercedes, and the schools are exceptional because the city is loaded. A lot of teenagers became bored of being well to do and having status and high educational expectations to live up to. This didn't come across much at all in the book. These characters just seemed like average, stupid, overly sexed teenagers.

Aside from the location references, why was it even called Palo Alto?

Arthur Miller was one of the most acclaimed and influential playwrights of the twentieth century, whose notable works include The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, A View From The Bridge and All My Sons, all of which are available in full cast recordings from L.A. Theatre Works.

Gregory Itzin is an American film and television actor. He is best known for his role as President Charles Logan in the series "24", a role for which he was twice nominated for a Primetime Emmy. He has had appearances in a number of television s most popular shows during the span of his career, including, "Matlock", "ER", "CSI", "Friends", "The West Wing", and three different Star Trek series. He s also had roles in numerous films including, "Adaptation", "The Ides of March", and "Lincoln". Most recently he s had recurring roles in "The Mentalist" and "Covert Affairs".

"Every nation has someone they condemn for their race."

In this stunning play, set in a holding room Vichy, France, in 1942, Arthur Miller introduces nine men who have been picked up on suspicion that they are Jews or Jewish sympathizers. As they are called, one by one, to be interrogated by Nazi officials before being released or put on the thirty-car freight train waiting at the station, they reveal their thinking, their rationalizations for having been picked up, and their belief that this is all a big mistake. A German major involved in the interrogations also begins to question his own role, reminding his colleague, a professor in charge of carrying out Nazi racial policies, that he is a "line officer," not trained for his role.

Waiting to be questioned are an actor, a waiter, a businessman, a psychoanalyst, a Marxist railroad worker, a gypsy, an ancient Hasid, a fourteen-year-old boy, and an Austrian prince. As they talk and begin to share bits of information, Miller examines the tendency of ordinary men, who are often victims, to become immobilized when faced with "an atrocity...that is inconceivable," to refuse to believe that such behavior can possibly happen in a civilized world. At the same time, he also examines those others, the Nazis and their collaborators in France, who serve an ideology, not mankind, those who subordinate themselves so completely to an abstract concept that they believe "there are no persons anymore."

As the truth about the waiting train and its destination slowly emerges, the sense of dread becomes palpable. The psychoanalyst, trying to rouse people to overpower the single guard on duty, cannot make his fellow captives understand that it is their belief that the world is essentially rational that keeps them from acting, and that the Nazis count on this belief. Pivotal to the action is von Berg, the young Austrian prince, a Christian who left his property and thousand-year-old heritage to escape to France, a man whose heart is in the right place but who does not understand that he himself must accept complicity in the rise of the Nazis.

Beautifully paced, the play is an unusually sophisticated treatment of this subject. Miller does not see events purely in black and white, showing instead that everyone creates his own reality to keep from accepting the unthinkable. Written in 1964, while Miller was representing the New York Herald Tribune at the Frankfurt war crimes trials of officials from Auschwitz/Birkenau, this play is Miller's creative reaction to the atrocities he has heard first-hand--and one of his most powerful plays. absolutely fabulous

I have never been more inspired by the dialogue in any book I've ever read. I know that everyone fusses about Miller's THE CRUCIBLE and DEATH OF A SALESMAN, but INCIDENT AT VICHY is definitely the best of the three. It is one of those books that makes you really think about what the author is saying. I have an entire list of breathtaking quotes especially from this book. I had to read it in AP English, 12th grade, and was blown away.

It's Miller: Four Pulitzer's. So what am I?

Arthur Miller jas never been afraid to s[peak out. In 1948, Ella Wheeler Wilcox said, "To sin by Silence when we should soeak out makews cowards out of men". She could not have been speaking of Arthur Miller, as that was the yeare that "incident at Vichy" premiered. And if silence is a sin, Miller is sitting in heaven on the right hand of god with plenty of parchment, a full ink well and- l;et's face it- a MacBook Pro.

During the Occupation of France during World War II, the Nazi's established the city of Vichy as a place to "check papers" and to deport hundreds of thousands of people by grain to south east Poland to be exterminated. This play moves without a break- yes, the audience is just as much prisoners as the dozen or so men who wait to be interrogated on stage. WE get to know them all, but some much better than others and we learn that one of our favorites will no doubt be gassed within days.

He is a Jew in southern France with bogus papers. He had a good hiding place with his wife and children but ventured out that morning to try to find codeine for a tootch ache that had become infected in his wife's lower jaw. On the street, he was detained, his nose was measured and he was brought to this detention center.

` In a way that only Arthur Miller could do , we are right there with there as the arguments and discussions o on between them while one after another is taken into thre office behind tghem. There are some we know will die; some we know will not. Those in question we form our own opinions about them but in the end it comes down to the morality of two men and the answer to the question, " What then must we do?"
This is an all male cast, so it's a fantastic project for a male prep school or college (How many times can you do twelve Angry Men) Arthur Miller is teimless and always remains fresh on the stage.

The Slovak "King James Version"

This is the Roh�cek translation of the Bible into Slovak. It was originally published in 1936. I happen to understand Slovak, but the first time I opened and read this version, I assumed somebody had made a mistake and labeled the work quite wrongly. It didn't sound anywhere close to the Slovak I knew. The reason, of course, is that Jozef Roh�cek began his translation work over a century ago, and hence wrote in a Slovak virtually everyone today would consider archaic. Maybe it's just me, but I sometimes think it sounds “Czech”, as well. Or Western Slovak? I also suspect that it might be deliberately archaizing and “sacralizing” – somehow, I doubt the ordinary Slovak Joe in Austria-Hungary or the First Czechoslovak Republic talked quite like this!

Apparently, Roh�cek's version is extremely difficult to understand for other reasons, too. It's very “literal”, attempting to follow the original Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek text as closely as possible, even to the point of sacrificing readability. When faced with terms that were untranslatable, Roh�cek took the liberty of creating entirely new Slovak words. So apparently, we're dealing with a highly competent scholarly translation, but one filled with both archaisms and neologism. Maybe it's just me, but the Old Testament is extremely hard to decipher, while the New Testament has more “flow”.

Roh�cek was a Lutheran, but it seems the Lutheran Church in Slovakia never adopted his translation, but clearly somebody somewhere is still distributing it. Whoever gave me a copy, probably got it from evangelicals or Pentecostals. It's also freely available on the web, including on sites which also offer modern Slovak translations.

I suppose you could say that this demanding translation gives an entirely new meaning to the expression “diligently search the Scriptures”!
