Concise primer. Not bad.

If you want a concise primer on bioinformatics, then this book may be of interest. I read this book as a review, but it seems that it may serve well for newcomers alike.
Compared to other primers such as "Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills", this book contains less unnecessasary figures (e.g., central dogma, etc.), covers wider range of topics, tries to be less verbose.
A drawback is that there is little description at an algorithmic level (e.g., dynamic programming). However, the book does a pretty good job in conveying the main ideas about what such algorithms do and why they are needed. I like this book's concise and accurate presentation style much better than lengthy and confusing style found in many other books (e.g., Bioinformatics - David Mount). Another drawback is that font is small.
Overall, this book is not bad. I think this book's preface tells you what you can expect from this book, so below I excerpted a paragraph.
"We will tell you how to do things, but this is not a software manual for commonly used packages. They have their own manuals that are (mostly) much better than anything we could provide. Many of the methods we describe rely on quite complex mathematical, statistical or computational techniques. Often we choose not to describe these at all, but where we do we have aimed for a simple conceptual understanding."

This little pamphlet is worth far more than the asking price. It distills the essence of the writings of Teresa of Avila, with a little St. John of the Cross. Written in contemporary language, it shows the Carmelite practices clearly, and is compatible with Protestantism, too. Presents classic insights without the reader having to decode qhat ancient language means. Very helpful in learning to rest in the presence of God without a bunch of denominational nonsense.

That Father Sam Antony Morello is a great contemplative is clearly demonstrated in this short work. It is an outstanding introduction to the practice of lectio divina and its impact on the great Carmelite saint. People are sometimes confused by Teresa's Interior Castle and left wondering how does one achieve such a profound life of prayer. This book will tell you how.

After searching high and low I finally found this book at Amazon. I had already researched the book and knew which one I wanted to buy but was a little concerned as to the possible delivery delays to Australia. Not only did the book arrive exactly as described and very well packaged... the delivery was very fast and it arrived within the timeframe quoted by Amazon. It is an excellent resource for anyone travelling to Sumatra. Most books available also cover Indonesia but this book concentrates wholely and solely on Sumatra. I was unable to purchase this book in Australia and Amazon really saved the day!

Richard T. Bynum, Jr., is founder and principal of Bynum Architecture in Greer, South Carolina, and the co-author of McGraw-Hill’s Handbook of Alternative Materials in Residential Construction and Architect’s Planner 2000. Mr. Bynum earned his Master of Architecture Degree from Clemson University and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from North Carolina State University. He is a registered architect, a member of the AIA, and over 20 of his articles have appeared in architectural publications.

At last, useable information on home insulation of all types

I bought this book based on the review of it written by the author. He wrote exactly what he described -- a treatise on all types of insulation and other means of blocking heat flow for applications around the home, etc. No high temperature ceramic stuff or cryogenic stuff is covered in this book. In particular, the chapters on fiber glass batt insulation, rigid board insulation and radiant barriers are well detailed and will give you the exact infomation needed to deal with contractors, or buy exactly what you need for your next remodeling or other project that involves insulation. A cursory review of the other chapters also showed good information, but was less relavent to my project. This book is as well detailed as any John Wiley book; Much better detail than you would expect from a McGraw-Hill publication. Copyright is 2001. This book is up to date. Engineers and architechts will find it to be a page turner. Even ordinary folks who might be spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on remodeling their home should buy this book just so they can help their contractor avoid making huge mistakes at the home owner's expense. Also covered in detail in this book are the development of modern insulations and insulation products used in the past.

Good for Contractors, Architects and Do-it-Your-Selfers

The Insulation Handbook, my third book, explores a full range of insulation materials and methods in one complete resource. The 500 page text contains over 140 illustrations along with a resource guide to facilitate correspondence with the product manufacturers of the materials discussed. Although the book is geared toward the residential architect and homebuilder, the informative and easy-to-understand writing style allows the text to be easily understood by the homeowner and architectural intern without sacrificing technical information.
As everyone knows, electric bills, gas bills, oil bills, HVAC repair bills, etc., are an everyday part of homeownership. As most homeowners, contractors, designers and architects already know, there is no magic pill to swallow in order to avoid the monetary realities in obtaining thermal comfort. But there is joy to be found in knowing the homeowner's most precious commodity is constructed using the most efficient, most environmentally responsible, most vermin resistant or maybe even the least expensive method available. There are a number of reasons as to why this book should be an essential part of a professional library. Geared as a resource in the evaluation of the many different types of insulation materials, The Insulation Handbook demonstrates that R-value is no longer the only consideration when choosing residential insulation. Other properties that now demand, and deserve, proper review are the material's cost, fire resistance, mold resistance, insect resistance, vermin and moisture transmission, environmental benefits, health impact as well as the ease and appropriateness of its application.
The organization of the book's text is simple and logical. The concepts of thermal comfort, vapor transmission, insulation principles and building codes provide the reader with a solid understanding of the "how's and whys" of building insulation. The chapters that discuss specific insulation materials are organized by application method; such as loose fill, blanket types, sprayed-in-place, foamed-in-place and rigid board products.
The scope of The Insulation Handbook goes beyond conventional insulation materials. Historical products from the early to mid-20th century, such as asbestos, insulating board and urea formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) are examined. Alternative strategies and materials are also discussed at length. Reflective insulation systems, as one example, demonstrate the use of a system of reflective sheets (radiant barriers) and air spaces that act as insulation when designed together. Also discussed are ceramic coatings, earth wall construction, straw bale construction as well as engineered systems such as in structural insulated panels (SIPs) and insulating concrete formwork (ICF).
I have also investigated some of the insulation materials that designers may encounter in the foreseeable future. Not only are these technologies a significant departure from conventional thermal mass-type materials, they are generally thinner, lighter and possess much higher R-values than common insulation materials available today. For example, a silica aerogel, in a 90 percent vacuum, has a thermal resistance of R-20 per inch. Other products, such as vacuum insulated panels (VIPs) can attain R-values of R-16 to R-40 per inch at room temperature.
The transfer of energy, heat, air and moisture is never-ending. My task as an author was to make the extreme amount of information available so that we, as architects, designers and builders can make informed and wise decisions regarding the critical selection of an insulation method. It has become paramount to understand why the proper installation of insulation materials is so critical to the life cycle cost of a structure and the thermal comfort of the occupant.

Four stars only because there isn't anything else like it out there. I think other experts could write books that had more up-to-date information, details, and especially guidance on how to select the best insulation options for a specific application. Now that I have stated that, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is getting ready to plan and build a new home. Otherwise you might end up with insulation in your home that was convenient for your builder and/or designer and not necessarily you. This is a topic that is barely discussed by most conventional builders. Builders concerned with energy efficiency might recommend something that sounds great but won't be beneficial in the long-term for you or your home. A word of caution--this book (and many other sources) will lead you to believe that polyurethane spray foam is the ultimate solution that will trump all other options. Do some research on polyurethane spray foams and isocyanates and you'll learn that serious new health concerns are emerging for those who chose this option.

I HOPE THIS ISN'T YOUR FIRST DECK

Just got this and am an active tarot user and am a huge superhero fan. Sad to say this deck doesn't come with a How-To guide, which I have found in every deck ever. These pocket guide usually say a little something about the artist and meanings for the cards, and usually a How-To on a type of spread for a reading. Sad to see this important item lacking, BECAUSE THE ART IS AMAZING! It is obvious DC was not interested in going "all in" on this project to even get a consultant or intern to throw together a packet for someone who this may be their first deck.
I HOPE THIS ISN'T YOUR FIRST DECK! Such a shame. It is the one thing this deck was sorely missing. Go buy a guide or I hope you already know your stuff.

An awesome tarot, but it needs a booklet

The Justice League Tarot is a re-imaging of a traditional Rider Tarot using DC Comic iconic character. This Justice League themed deck not only include characters that have been Justice Leaguers, but also their enemies and friends. With 78 cards in a Tarot deck, that is a lot of characters to draw from the DC universe. Fortunately, Sara Richard demonstrates an expertise on Tarot and DC comics to create a very satisfying deck.

These cards come from DC Collectible, a name that is associated with merchandize based on DC comics. Therefore, this deck is primarily treated as a collectible item and a Tarot deck second. This explains why there are certain issues associated with this deck.

These cards are about the same size as a Lo Scarabeo Tarot Deck, measuring 4.75” by 2.75”. However, the cards are made of a thicker card stock and are not as flexible. This deck is 1 and 3/8” tick. In contrast, a typical Lo Scarabeo deck is 1” tick.

The back of these cards is bordered black, with reversible “frozen themed” imagery within a white frame. The front is bordered black with a thin white line framing the picture, and labeled at the bottom. The artwork is not extracted directly from comic book illustrations, but rather an interpretation fitting to the Tarot tradition. However, it is reminiscent to a mix of Romita and Miller, but totally appropriate for Tarot.

The Major Arcana are labeled at the bottom with the standard names from the Rider Tarot. I think that the DC characters associated with each Major Arcana are spot on representation of the cards. So Tarot enthusiast can intuit what the DC characters are about, even if they don’t know their names. Similarly, DC comics fan can have an impression of what the Major Arcana represents from the DC character in it.

The Minor Arcana are also labeled at the bottom. The court cards follow the Riders Tarot tradition labeled as page, knight, queen, or king.

The pips are labeled from Ace to ten and these represent the suits of Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles. The pips sometimes incorporate their symbols into the cards as is, but often they incorporate a reinterpretation to fit the scene. For example: Six of Wands shows Booster Gold with six cameras “projecting” on him; Eight of Swords shows Brainiac with eight orbs on his body; Six of Cups shows three Flashes running on water and at a distance an arc held by six pillars; and Nine of Pentacles shows Black Canary releasing her cry upwards with nine sound waves shown.

This Tarot set includes a velvet black bag with Justice League Tarot written on silver. The bag is nice, but the deck can barely fit in it. However, not even a Little White Book (LWB) is included in this set. This is very unfortunate as the selection of characters for the Tarot is so appropriate and intriguing that I am left wanting to know more about the creator insight on this Tarot, which could be usually glanced over in a LWB. At the very least, the name of the characters could have been listed for those unfamiliar with the DC universe.

This Tarot is obviously intended for DC comics fans who also like Tarot or this style of art. If a book had been included, this Tarot would be perfect to introduce Tarot beginners to DC comics, or DC comics casual fans to the world of Tarot. As is, only experts on Tarot could interpret the DC comics characters in these cards, and similarly, DC hard core fans could interpret the meaning of the tarot card. This is very unfortunate because this is otherwise a very well thought out Tarot.
