Livingston Merchant has doctorates from Harvard in International Relations and Brown University in Asian History. He has spent the last ten years of his career in Turkey and Northern Iraq. He lives in Maastricht, the Netherlands and is studying Kurdish history and language.

Doesn't deliver very much

I apologize for the length of this review, but since this book won't be very useful for people trying to learn Sorani Kurdish, I want to provide some hints for materials that might help, in connection with which this book might be of some (very minimal) use.

First, materials for non-Kurds to learn Sorani Kurdish are very limited. There's a small and systematic textbook in French, "Methode de Kurde Sorani" by Joyce Blau, available with a (separate) CD from the French Amazon site. (Reportedly it's being translated into English, but I have no idea when it might eventually be published.) Unfortunately, there's nothing comparable in English at the moment, but there is an amazing resource that you can download for free from the internet. Since I can't provide internet links here, just do a search for "Sorani Kurdish Reference Grammar" and you should find the on-line book "Sorani Kurdish: A Reference Grammar With Selected Readings", by former Harvard Professor Wheeler Thackston. This is a PDF file available from the Harvard Iranian Studies website, and consists of three parts: a 90-page reference grammar explaining the grammar of the language with examples in both Arabic script and Latin transcription, a 70-page collection of readings (Arabic script only) with explanatory notes, and an 80-page Kurdish-English glossary. You can download it and print it off, either as one large document or in three separate parts.

This is an excellent piece of work, and Professor Thackston deserves praise and gratitude from anyone interested in Kurdish for making freely available to everyone such a high-quality work on a language for which quality materials are pretty hard to come by. That said, it's not a textbook; the grammar portion at the beginning explains the grammar systematically in terms of grammatical categories, rather than in lessons. The approach is quite sophisticated and reads like what you would expect from a Harvard professor; it's pretty heavy going. This is in part due to the author's very abstract style, but in part due to the grammar of Sorani itself, in which the verbal system, in particular, with subject and object pronouns attached to different parts of the verb, and even placed inside it, can be very daunting to wrap your head around. This aspect of the language is very, very confusing and frustrating to English speakers, and I suspect this is a major reason why more introductory materials have not been produced to date. I don't know if there's any way to make this easy, but Professor Thackston at least does explain it systematically, with lots of examples. Frankly, until something better becomes available, I think anyone interested in Sorani would be crazy not to download his materials as their primary resource, as the other materials that have been produced in English are very slapdash and really don't teach anything beyond a few phrases to be memorized.

That brings us to the book under review. The author says it is "only an introduction" and indeed in many respects it's really even less than that. He says the aim is "communication skills, not linguistic expertise", and that "it is designed so that it may be used with the help of a native-speaking Kurdish mentor." After a brief introduction, there is a three-page alphabet chart (only the isolated forms of the letters being presented), which will not enable anyone who doesn't already know the script to read words in it. (Readers already familiar with the Arabic script would be able to learn the pronunciation of the Kurdish letters, though.) Then comes the "meat" of the book, which consists of 15 short lessons. Each starts with a paragraph describing a conversational situation in Kurdistan, a short dialogue of the situation described (given in transcribed Kurdish, English, and Arabic-script Kurdish); these dialogues are generally about five to eight sentences each. Then come a list of the words and phrases used in the dialogue, a couple of very simplistic grammar notes on some of the constructions evidenced in the dialogue, a handful of example sentences illustrating these constructions, and some short Kurdish-to-English and English-to-Kurdish translation drills. (No key is given for these, so those working without a Kurd to help them will just have to hope they've gotten them right.)

The dialogues contained in the lessons contain various grammatical elements that are not explained in the grammar sections, which in fact only provide a superficial glance at a handful of the simplest aspects of the language. The reader will really not learn how to say hardly anything from the lessons, beyond possibly memorizing and repeating the sentences in them.

In short, the book will not prepare the reader to speak Kurdish independently, even at a very basic level.

The author twice mentions the materials produced by Professor Thackston, and provides the URL to download them, so he was evidently aware of this more systematic and ambitious approach to the language; his own book, however, is not at all systematic, and not very ambitious.

Is it then useless? No, I think not entirely; someone working with the Thackston materials could find some additional sentences, used in dialogues, in this book, and thus it might have some utility as a supplement. But there's still a real need for a graduated, user-friendly introductory textbook, preferably with audio, for Sorani Kurdish for beginners to use; unfortunately, this book doesn't really fill the bill.

Great tool!

This is a great tool for Kurdi-Sorani. Yes, there are some spelling errors with the Perso-Arabic alphabet and not all the vocabulary lists are presented in the Perso-Arabic alphabet, but you can still navigate your way through the book without difficulty. The book is laid out in an easy to read/follow format. The lessons and vocab lists/grammar notes are pertinent to learning a foreign language. Here are some up-to-date resources available:

1. Kurdish (Sorani)/English Phrasebook and Dictionary -- by Nicholas Awde.

2. "Turtles Can Fly" - an Independent Film Channel movie about the days leading up to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The movie is based in northern Iraqi in the mountainous Kurdistan region. The film is spoken in Sorani with English subtitles.

3. Facebook - Learn Kurdish Sorani with Sarmand Kinany (great source!). He also has currently 16 lessons on his YouTube channel.

4. Sorani Kurdish Grammar -- by Wheeler Thackston (you can Google it and find it).

Very Helpful

I have been looking for a resource to help me with studying Sorani Kurdish and this book has been excellent so far! I study it on my own and also with my Kurdish friends, who also think the book is quite good. They have had some small suggestions because in places they thought the translation to English was not perfectly accurate (but not a major discrepancy.) On the whole the book is the most useful resource for Sorani Kurdish that I have used to date. My thanks to the author!

Make it an addition to your medical library

Auseful tool to find normal values and aceptable levels of every element of body fluids. Abrief desciption of each test is followed by lists of medical conditions that may influence the result.The design of professional considerations add more value to this book, since abnormal results not necessarily reflect abnormal medical conditions, they may as well come from various mistakes when preparing or handling the test, or influenced by the patient's previous medications. The text is well organized with plain English. A very useful book that I'd like to recommend it to every medical student.

The best lab text ever!

I've taught nursing for the past 22 years and this is by far the best lab book I've ever used. At first glance it may appear intimidating, but it is very user friendly. The first few pages are medical diagnoses and their common labs with the most critical few astericked. The majority of the text is alphabetized by lab name and includes not only the values, but panic values, highlighted boxes for signs and symptoms of toxicities and treatments for each, and an extensive list of causes for high and low levels. There is much more to this text, but these are the qualities I love most. If you want to prevent patient's problems or at least identify them early, this text is a must and it will make you look like a genius in the process! I won't leave home without it.

It was defined not just by the wealth, professions, possessions, or the levels of education of its members, but also by the way they asserted their modernity.

Using the ethnically and religiously diverse middle class of the cosmopolitan city of Aleppo, Syria, as a point of departure, Watenpaugh explores the larger political and social implications of what being modern meant in the non-West in the first half of the twentieth century.

In a remarkable piece of scholarship, Watenpaugh situates the concept of "modernity" at the core of the middle class experience in Aleppo from the Young Turk Revolution of 1908 through the end of the mandate period in 1946. "Modernity" - a term which is often over-used and inadequately historicized by many scholars - here avoids anachronism, and indeed, one of the major historiographical contributions of Watenpaugh's text is the grounded and intricate examination of precisely what it was to "be modern" in a period marked by numerous challenges to the formation of various modes of identity. As Watenpaugh's nuanced and sophisticated analysis reveals, "being modern" was not simply a discursive act of saying so - rather, in this case, modernity was a conscious and contentious process of invention by a disparate middle class attempting to situtate itself in the midst of an array of social and politcal changes. It is refreshing to read scholarship that does not shy away from the making of the middle class; and Watenpaugh's careful treatment of such an analytical category provides a useful investagative framework for scholars whose work falls outside the Middle East. Finally, by situating an "experience of modernity" as an internal facet of middle class identity in Aleppo - rather than as an externally imposed product of the "West" or an unconscious mimicry of Western practices - it once again becomes clear that circuits of transnational dialogue need critical engagment before we can posit the a priori existence of all of the "isms" found in Watenpaugh's title.

Keith Watenpaugh's work is a seminal contribution to the history of the region and to the larger scholarly universe .... It must be a required part of any sort of reading list on modern Middle Eastern history, and I am sure that it will form an important component of graduate courses on the history of the region. But, perhaps equally significant, Being Modern in the Middle East is a very important contribution to the rank of scholarly studies of the middle class across the world. It adds one more work to a relatively small list of books that can and should be used to illustrate how the experience of modernity and the formation the middle class are both unique to specific regions yet offer a wealth of possibilities for comparative historical scholarship.

Mitchell Duneier is Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University and a regular visiting professor at the City University of New York. He is the author of Sidewalk and Slim's Table, recipient of the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Publication Award.

Philip Kasinitz is Presidential Professor of Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author of Caribbean New York and co-author of Inheriting the City, also the recipient of the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Publication Award.

Alexandra K. Murphy, a postdoctoral fellow at the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan, received her doctorate in sociology from Princeton in 2012. She is the author of Where the Sidewalk Ends: Poverty in an American Suburb, to be published by Oxford.

Sociological Experiments Make Great Reading

The Urban Ethnography Reader opens with a story about Professor Robert Park tasking his students with investigating what forces cause social transformation. He urged them to "look at the commonplace with new eyes, to try to understand the world of the stranger next door, and to examine everyday life with both the discipline of scientists and the adventurous spirit of explorers."

I don't know about you, but that line had me hooked! This collection of fifty-two essays covers everything from observations of Chinatown in 1890 by Jacob Riis to a study of Venice Beach and how it has become an upper-class imitation of its humble, bohemian origins by Andrew Deener.

The greatest thing about this collection is that it focuses less on theories and almost entirely on first-hand accounts, interviews, etc. These ethnographers sometimes very literally lived in these different places to better understand a different culture with different world views. Ethnography is one of the oldest sciences and The Urban Ethnography Reader successfully brings together elements of literature, history, and anthropology.

Whether you find that you agree with the observations the various authors make or not, each account is undeniably vivid and detailed. And you don't have to have any previous knowledge of ethnography to understanding their findings. This is a great introductory text, especially if you were to follow it with heavier readings like that found in Cities Perceived: Urban Society in European and American Thought, 1820-1940 or A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction.

Excellent selection and for a great price in paperback. Both classic pieces and contemporary pieces are included, and the editors have done a tremendous job in editing down all of them to a manageable size. A true Florida patriot, Hiaasen exposes corruption, money-grubbing and rampant development. The volume picks up where its predecessor Kick Ass: Selected Columns of Carl Hiaasen left off. Stevenson, associate director of writing programs at the University of Florida, again edits. There are more than 200 essays in this volume, and every single one of them is a gem. It makes no difference if the people, places, and events being discussed are unfamiliar to most non-Floridians. Hiaasen gives them universality with his style and point of view. As readers of his many best-selling novels will tell you, Hiaasen is a playful writer, always looking for the fresh phrase, the eye-catching image. He is also--and this is essential for a writer of an opinion column--outspoken and (apparently) entirely unafraid of offending the people about whom he writes. Here, as in Kick Ass, he writes about politics and politicians, crime and criminals, ordinary people and extraordinary people, and a lot of justplain south Florida weirdness (such as a museum commemorating the deadly Hurricane Andrew). Many of the essays are tantalizing, offering up glimpses of a bigger story (like "Zucchini Could Lose Supermarket Citizenship," which hints at a bizarre language war being waged in Florida grocery stores). Others tell the whole story in a nutshell. Along with Kick Ass, this is one of the best collections of occasional journalism published in recent years. David Pitt

Good, But Not As Good As The First Hiaasen Compilation

Carl Hiaasen's second compilation of his Miami Herald columns continues to show the biting wit which is prevalent in his usually terrific novels. But my guess is that the first book of columns "Kick" was probably designed to be the Best of Hiaasen with no plans for a sequel. Thus the columns contained in "Paradise" are the second cut and thus just not as good, although they are enjoyable to read. Not as many idiotic South Florida politicians this time around, not as many idiotic citizens. I was also disappointed in the way he handled the Florida election fiasco for the 2000 Presidential election. This was a topic just made for his humor, but he chose to use his forum as a soapbox to get a recount and to get Al Gore elected (he doesn't say it, but it was pretty obvious to me). My hope is that he plans to use this as fodder for a future novel and thus wanted to save his material.
Hiaasen is a great columnist. I live over 1,000 miles away from South Florida, but he gets his point across pretty well. It would have been nice if each story had a little afterword as to what ultimately happened to the people in the column (i.e. did the politician give up his $15,000 desk that was paid for with taxpayer money voluntarily).
Good for the Hiaasen completest, but the first book "Kick" is the better choice.

Even Better Than His Best Novels

I wish I could say I was a rabid Carl Hiaasen fan like a lot of people who seem to love all of his novels, because I love to read and love good writing, and Hiaasen's writing style is always excellent. I loved "Tourist Season", "Sick Puppy", and "Stormy Weather", but thought that he was pushing it a little in some of his other novels like "Lucky You" and "Native Tongue" where the plots were, at least in my opinion a little contrived. So when I got this book, which is a collection of his newspaper articles for the Miami Herald, I wasn't sure what I was going to think about it.
It's excellent! I thought his best novels were very good but his true calling is his work as a reporter. The articles are meaningful in the way that he exposes corruption and the destruction of Florida's natural resources, but they're written with a great sarcastic wit. I know a little about South Florida politics and environmental issues, because we always vacation in Key West and you get the news on television from Miami, but you don't need to in order to enjoy this book tremendously. There are too many great articles in this collection to name them all, but the one about the "Incredible Shrinking Palm Trees" in particular is one of the funniest things I've ever read. This book is better than even his best novels, and the shame of it is that all of it is [unfortunately] true.
