"Gamelan Scores should be particularly welcome for readers...not only for the notation provided but also for the additional analytic sections. The notation includes balungan (the melody played on most of the metallophones), vocal melody, and text, colotomic gongs, and brief information
about sequence (usually in the form of an arrow, an asterisk, or brief annotation indicating the point in a piece where one leaps to the next piece).

Analytic additions include summaries of scenes that group the pieces by dramatic unit and a list of all the musical pieces played in a given performance, sorted by musical form, which is a primary Javanese conceptual framework both for gamelan practice and accompaniment of dance and theater.

Emerson's introduction to this volume is invaluable, discussing the preparation that went into the musical aspects of these performances and including images of Purbo Asmoro's handwritten lists of repertoire. Extensive end notes are brimming with background information about each piece that is not a standard part of the Solonese wayang repertoire or is treated in a nonstandard manner."

fascinating -- but only if you're a true crossword addict

I wouldn't call this book particularly well written. There's some history, but the book doesn't provide a long, captivating narrative of the development of the puzzle, or a psychoanalysis of the folks who become addicted to their daily puzzle. Rather, the book is more or less a collection of comments and insight from many of the creators of currently-published crosswords -- how they got into puzzle creation, how they sold their first puzzle, how long it takes them to solve the Sunday NY Times puzzle, etc. The book is behind-the-scenes reality show on crossword puzzles. After reading it, you'll have a good sense of how puzzles are created, how they are edited, what makes a puzzle good, what makes a puzzle bad (or unpublishable), and how the daily crossword puzzle ends up as a final product in your morning newspaper. You'll learn about the preferences of different editors (now I finally know why my collections of NY Times crosswords edited by Will Shortz are SO MUCH MORE FUN TO SOLVE than the NY Times crosswords edited by Eugene Maleska). You'll learn about the evils of "crosswordese" (if you're reading this -- you know what I'm talking about -- words like etui). The book contains biographical shorts of the various crossworders who contributed -- they come from varied backgrounds, from Will Shortz, who majored in crossword puzzles in college (seriously) to dentists and physical therapists and lawyers who got sucked in by their hobby. The book also contains some very good puzzles and their solutions -- though I wouldn't recommend this book if your only interest in in solving puzzles. Overall, a great selection if you want to get to know the clever people and the detailed process that deliver crossword puzzles to the rest of us -- it may be of limited interest to anyone else.

Great Fun for the Casual Crossword Puzzle Fan!

Caution: This book contains coarse words that would never appear in The New York Times crossword puzzle.
Most people who occasionally do crossword puzzles are bound to have certain questions such as:
(1) How are the puzzles constructed?
(2) What do editors do with puzzles submitted to them?
(3) What were the famous puzzle editors like in person?
(4) What do the best puzzle solvers do to make faster progress?
(5) How to solvers prepare for contests?
(6) What reference books do constructors and the best solvers use?
(7) What are the most common short words used in puzzles?
(8) How should unusual clues be interpreted?
(9) How should I attack unusual puzzles?
Those who have wanted to know more about these and many other interesting questions will find many interesting answers from a variety of perspectives in this multifaceted book.
The book contains a fine combination of history, profiles, interviews, answers to common questions by many experts, and perspectives on a variety of crossword puzzles. In addition, you will be pleased to know that the book also provides a number of puzzles and answers to entertain you. For some of the famous puzzles, there are also comments about the puzzle by the constructor.
My favorite part was the section on how to construct puzzles, with many references to computer programs and on-line resources to help. I have always wanted to try my hand at a puzzle, and this shows me the basic elements. I'm sure it will be very difficult, but personally rewarding.
You will also find a good appendix on various resources, suggested readings, a glossary, a brief summary of factoids about words that appear frequently, and biographies and photographs of constructors and editors.
The tone of the book is very down to earth. You will learn about the mistakes, blind spots, and foibles of those involved with crossword puzzles, as well as their successes. It almost felt like reading a series of People magazine issues just on crossword puzzles.
This book will be a favorite gift over the next year or so for those who enjoy puzzles, but have not read very much about them.
After you finish puzzling your way through this book to greater understanding of how to enjoy crossword puzzles, I suggest that you think about how they could be changed to become even more fun? What's missing, from your point of view? What is there too much of?

Jim Marrs is best known for Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy (1989), the book that Oliver Stone's film JFK was partially based on. Now Marrs attacks new mysteries and conspiracies in this extensive review of UFO history and government cover-ups. After describing his own UFO sighting near Jackson, Mississippi, in 1952, Marrs recounts his involvement with other UFO cases as a newspaper reporter and his suspicions that the U.S. government knows much more about aliens than it will admit. As his title indicates, the author has concluded that UFOs are piloted by extraterrestrials of various types and with diverse motives. However, rather than taking that conclusion for granted, Marrs guides his readers through 50 years of UFO history that includes some less-traveled byways, off-ramps, and dead ends. He incorporates an ample amount of information from UFO books of the 1960s and 1970s--strange lights on the moon, the ancient-astronaut theories of Erich von Daniken, cattle mutilations, Nazi saucers at the South Pole, the contactees of the 1950s--and updates it credibly with UFO data from the 1980s and 1990s, providing a reasonable survey of abductions, secret underground UFO bases, the MJ-12 group, crop circles, remote viewing, and channeling. How can something as momentous as contact with aliens be kept secret? In an appendix, Marrs refers to the Bilderbergers and the Council on Foreign Relations as examples of how small groups of powerful individuals can withhold information and manipulate world events. Excellent Overview of UFOlogy

Jim Marrs has produced an excellent overview of the UFO literature and history, from its possible origins in folk/fairy tales and biblical passages to its current manifestations in the form of crop circles, animal mutilations, and alien abductions. Even though the author does believe that UFOs are "real," I feel that he is very objective in his writing (which is rare for a journalist such as himself). Although it may not be enough to satisfy the Philip Klasses of the world, he does present some of the evidence and criticisms of debunkers alongside the cases he refers to. Naturally, despite the book's length, I found incidents and theories that I would like to have seen expounded further upon and which I would have included. These are just my own personal feelings, of course, and I fully understand that no author of such an overview could include every thing I would want nor (I am sure) everything that even he wanted to include. Even as someone fairly well-read in ufology, though, I must admit that there were several "new" events and ideas contained in the book that I had not seen nor considered before. Anyone interested in UFOs would profit from this book, even those who still refuse to consider their existence.
The first chapter was particularly interesting to me and, I feel, somewhat brave on the part of the author. Basically, this chapter tosses up the concept of earth's moon being a spaceship. I must say unequivocally that the author does not argue that this is the case, however. While this is an interesting premise and should not be dismissed out of hand, I worry that some doubters out there will simply quit reading when they see such a "preposterous" notion in the very first chapter. I would encourage anyone who does feel the impulse to toss the book aside at the very beginning to keep reading because your beliefs will either be challenged or reinforced by this book.
Finally, the book is very well documented in terms of the sources Jim Marrs consulted. Not only is there a list of notes and references for each chapter, there is a pretty big bibliography at the end. This is very important for works in this field because the author, if he is going to challenge the reader to consider the reality of UFOs, should feel it is his duty and requirement to point the reader to the locations of the facts as he gathered them, so that the reader--if he/she chooses--can consult those same works. Alien Agenda is the type of book that ufologists need to produce because it strengthens the foundation of the entire literature and puts the pressure on debunkers to disprove each incident and idea one by one rather than ridicule and dismiss the entire field as a whole.

One of the Best books I have Ever read!

Wow! Jim Marrs has done his homework and provided a vast amount of information from different perspectives. He discusses the UFO phenomenon throughout history to the present day, including inside info. on possible underground alien communities existing on Earth and Mars.

The book starts off with UFOs and the secret interest of world governments, the development of advanced technologies, and then goes into abductions, animal mutilations, crop circles, remote viewing, and the future of our planet.

I especially learned a lot from the last chapter, which explains the history of the Federal Reserve Bank and certain secret societies of the wealthy, elite few who rule this world through the use of worthless paper money.

You should definitely read this book! I took my time with it and absorbed every word. It was well worth the time. Thank you Jim Marrs!

An intriguing read

What an intriguing read! I did find the title a tad misleading. I thought the book was a theory about what the agenda of the Aliens might be. Instead, I was treated to the agenda of the government in keeping historical and current information about extraterrestrial visitations from us, the people. Information that has not made it into the mainstream mass media is ferretted out in a way that is realistic, documented and makes sense. A final question is asked: if we *do* have visitors who want us to "take them to our leader," just who would that leader be? What does he or she represent? And what are the priorities in representing Earth? The possibilities are intriguing, to say the least, and leave the reader with many questions that remain to be answered with nothing more, and nothing less, than serious contemplation by each and every one of us.

Useful introduction to Jewish Philosophy

This abridged version of Maimonedes thoughts covers about one quarter of the complete book with the same title. The selection by Guttmann concentrates on Maimonedes' attempt to bring rational Aristotelian philosophy in accord with classical Jewish literature. Thus, allegorical reading of the anthropomorphic features of the biblical God is urged for a better understanding of the hidden meaning and to bring it in conformity with reason. Other main aspects covered deal with Prophecy, Providence and the way to a godly life. It is the latter which struck me as most interesting because the dedication of every moment of one's life to God (except when engaged in mundane duties which ought to be kept to a minimum) is precisely what one finds in the Bhagavad Gita except that the name of the Deity is Krishna rather than Yahweh. Apart from the name there is absolutely no other difference. If we are serious in believing that there is only one God in control of the universe this should not be disturbing because all nations are entitled to use their name for the Deity which encompasses all. Yet Maimonedes insists that only through contemplation of the Jewish law can perfection be achieved and one finds some rather derogatory remarks about those who think otherwise. Although Maimonedes emphasizes that the way to God is through humility, tolerance of the views of others will not be found. Furthermore, while intellect and reason are extolled Maimonedes has no difficulty accepting oral traditions of biblical stories, especially in regard to Abraham, Jacob and Moses, which have not only no corrollary in the Pentateuch but are at times at variance with it. Thus, the imaginative faculty and the rational faculty, as Maimonedes called them, and which distinguish the human being from animals, did not seem to find complete harmony in his view of the world and may leave some of us still perplexed.
The introductions to the book by Frank and by Guttmann are very helpful in setting Maimonedes' work in its appropriate context. For the student of comparative religion this is a useful introduction to medieval Jewish philosophy as it originated in a Muslim milieu and which is still held in high esteem by some modern theologians.

Wonderful book for scholars of biblical history

Few people today realize that the writings of Jewish scholars such as Maimonides account for how Hebrew thinking was incorporated into Catholic theology. This is the book for the wonks, like me, who like to read the Bible from an historical point of view rather than from a theological, non-thinking point of view that allows for no variation from dogma. A little erudite for the general reader.

A Great Way In To A Great Book

Since Amazon is lumping reviews of all 'Guide' translations together, this one is of the Guttman/Rabin translation/abridgement published by Hackett. To me, it might be called a godsend, since I first tried a headlong assault on an unabridged version, which quickly wore me down with its endless examples of words with multple senses and anthropomorphic references to God. Where's the beef? I wondered. This edition gets the novice reader straight to the meaty matters Maimonides considers, such as whether the universe was created or not, what the nature of prophecy is, what can be understood or even said about God, how the Bible can be reconciled to philosophy, and how traditional practices are to be viewed. His answers won't satisfy fundamentalists, either Jewish or Christian, but his discussion is always challenging, and mostly clear-minded (he lost me with many of his thoughts on the spheres, since in this area he was manifestly out of his depth). This abridgement is about 1/4 of the original, but the arrangement has a good, logical flow. The 1940's-early 50's translation is very readable, though the scriptural quotes leave something to be desired in the clear, modern English department. One additional factor that jumps out at me from the text is the sheer force of Maimonides personality. (I have the feeling he wouldn't approve of me studying him, but his work may yet have a salutary effect on my life, reluctant as he would have been to teach someone like me!) Be prepared to meet a great man.
