Great Study Tool
By Pete
This is an absolute must have for law students. European Union Law is a difficult concept for many U.S. students. This book, although written from a British perspective, provides an excellent overview of the system and some key concepts.

It is lacking in explaining some key cases and case law. Use your casebook to supplement this.

It is also slightly dated. Make sure you review Turkey's EU integration and European human rights on your own.

An excellent intro, and certainly the most comprehensive study tool currently available.

Just the right blend of fun and hard clues
By Lisa Brandt
These puzzles are rated medium difficulty (which I consider to mean hard for most non-addicts), and modern, which means lots of puns, plays on words, and misleading (but actually fair) clues. (Example: "Got milk?" in Persian -- Meow.) There is normally a themed "long answers" subject, although some are just potpourri. I personally like this style of puzzle a lot, because these clever clues give you a chance to keep thinking and work out the answer, rather than forcing you into a situation where you simply don't know the answer to some obscure factual question. I would say this is a very good puzzle book for someone who likes puzzles for the adventure and the intellectual fun.

1 Across: Best Crossword Book I've Bought in Awhile!
By Ally
I have a confession to make... I'm a crossword puzzleaholic!!! They both stimulate and calm my mind, so there's pretty much no situation in which I won't sit and do a crossword. I love them on planes, especially.

- These puzzles are the perfect level of difficulty for me. They're not at all easy, but I can finish (or come close to finishing) each puzzle so I get that sense of accomplishment. It's also a ice ego boost, y'know? ;)

- The book has a spiral, which is awesome! SO much easier to prop the book on your knee and solve a few clues when you're not fighting to keep a stiffly bound book open.

- The clues are from this century. Look, I like old movies and classic references as much as the next person, but when you have a puzzle book that mixes references from multiple decades, clues like "star of a top cop show" lose all meaning. The clues in this book are current enough to make sense without being reliant on abhorrent things like reality stars or gossip columns.

Beware: Some people are obsessed with the type of paper their puzzles come on. This is pretty cheap old-school color booking-type paper. Rough and beige in color. It's fairly flimsy, but I don't mind it at all. After all, I'm not framing my tiny mental masterpieces!

All in all a great book and I'll be buying more in the series!

Good puzzles--different binding would be more convenient
By Arch Stanton
Typical Sunday Los Angeles Times crosswords. If you look forward to the Sunday puzzles, and don't want to wait seven days for the next one, this would be a good collection for you. 200 puzzles (with answers, of course) in a paperback format. My only complaint is with the binding. The puzzles would be MUCH easier to do if the book were spiral bound rather than the normal paperback binding. This makes it extremely hard to fill in the spaces near the spine while at the same time keeping the cover and other pages out of your way.

The Future of Bioethics: International DialoguesFrom Oxford University Press

Akira Akabayashi presents the first book to explore the conversation on bioethics that is taking place between scholars and practitioners from the East and West: the first book in the discipline of bioethics for the globalized world of the future. An international team of experts address emerging issues in bioethics, focus on new developments and their potential for change, and set the agenda for the future.

Most studies in bioethics advocating East-West dialogue have either attempted cross-cultural comparisons or have proposed Eastern philosophical paradigms to counter Western ideas. The tacit premise of previous work on the East-West dialogue is therefore a strain of relativism. Simply maintaining a respectful distance from other cultures is no longer sufficient in this era of globalization. The time has come for active engagement among different cultural perspectives. The Future of Bioethics initiates discussion on bioethical issues that arise from new medical technologies such as regenerative medicine, enhancement, research ethics, and synthetic biology, and goes on to address challenging dilemmas that result from the globalization of social change, such as transplantation tourism, public health ethics, care in the aging society, and professionalism. The volume presents original work by leading researchers in the field, alongside that of promising new scholars; as such, it establishes not only a cross-cultural dialogue, but dialogue between researchers of different generations.

The book is divided into two parts--the first on the progress of biomedical technologies and ethics, and the second on globalization and bioethics. Each part contains four sections on different topics, which feature a lead essay followed by a set of commentaries and further discussion.

Bored with the PGA, he decides to check out “the Lolitas,” on the LPGA Tour. Jack chooses as a magazine subject Ginger Clayton, a fiery eighteen-year old whose killer looks and killer game make her the kind of star who can take the LPGA to the next level. She is, indeed, The Franchise Babe, and everyone wants a part of her, but someone, it seems, is trying to knock Ginger out of the competition-permanently. Filled with dead-on take downs of sports moms, adventurous promoters, suck-up corporate sponsors, double-dealing sports agents, and just enough menace to make golf dangerous, Dan Jenkins latest tale of hijinks on the links is not to be missed.

From Publishers Weekly
In Jenkins's outrageous sports satire (after Slim and None), middle-aged sportswriter Jack Brannon is sick of writing about Tiger Woods and the boring testosterone-charged PGA tour. So the swaggering Texan decides to check out the ladies of the LPGA, specifically hot teen sensation and fellow Texan, Ginger Clayton. She's a fiery eighteen-year-old blonde with the potential to become the next golf superstar (or, in pro golf parlance, a real franchise babe). Soon, Jack is impressed by Thurlene, Ginger's gorgeous single mom, and enamored of Ginger's talent, beauty and precocious professionalism. He decides to tag along, taking notes and observing the peculiar peccadilloes of professional sports—including crazed stage-golf moms and others who'll stop at nothing to get ahead in the high-stakes game. Jenkins pokes fun at the golf world eccentricities he knows so well and allows Jack major leeway in making smart-mouth commentary as he falls in love and gets a great scoop. (June)

From Booklist
Jenkins, the dean of contemporary golf writers, delivers a rollicking broadside aimed at women’s golf. Our narrator, golf journalist Jack Brannon, weary of the Tiger-dominated PGA Tour, has decided to check out the LPGA’s Franchise Babe, 18-year-old Ginger Clayton, who seems primed to challenge the plethora of Korean women dominating the tour. The tale follows Ginger as she moves through several minor tour stops leading up to a major tournament, the Dinah Shore, renamed the Lagoutte-Dinah Cup in honor of a big-bucks Frenchman attempting to corner the U.S. market for horse meat (the commercial sponsorship of golf tournaments is only one of the many targets at which Jenkins slings his satirical arrows). But will the Ginger Express be derailed by golf’s version of Tonya Harding? The laughs pour forth as Jenkins delivers politically incorrect body blows with an inspired randomness that suggests Jackson Pollack attacking a canvas with an overflowing paint bucket. But, as always with Jenkins, the golf is as precisely and knowledgeably described as the jokes are scattershot. Great fun for golf fans, who will have a ball filling in real names for fictional characters. --Bill Ott

Vintage Jenkins - Just Not Enough Of It!
By Gary K. McCormick
Long-time Dan Jenkins readers will recognize a lot of punch lines when they read "The Franchise Babe", but not a single one that isn't still funny a second, third, or fourth time around. Jenkins' irreverent, non-PC take on the world of golf, as previously visited in "Dead Solid Perfect", "The Money-Whipped, Steer-Job, Three-Jack, Give-Up Artist" and "Slim and None", is still laugh out loud funny.

I liked the continuity with his earlier novels, casting his new sportswriter character Jack Brannon - still a Texan, still from Fort Worth, of course - as a proteg of his character sportswriter Jim Tom Pinch (who crossed over between Dan's football novels and his golf novels, with one foray into his own book, "You Gotta Play Hurt"). The LPGA Tour in this novel is inhabited by "Lolitas" who knock the ball a country mile and have gams that stop traffic, Mommy-Dearest golf moms, and a drop-dead gorgeous Lolita Mom as a love interest for the lucky Jack (Dan's characters ALWAYS score well in the babe department!). Knowing that Mr Jenkins is no spring chicken, I'm grateful for every sentence that comes off of his geezer-codger typewriter, but I wish that he could have graced us with more than 224 pages in his latest effort.

Fun,Truth,Sex&Laughter on the LPGAtour...Pure Jenkins Joy
By Bradford B.
One more very funny, suitably sexist, terrifically politically incorrect, bit of DeadSolidPerfection...on the LPGA tour. Cynical Sportswriter finds enlightenment via TeenGolfGoddess & her mom, with the richly portrayed wacked characters, real tour insight, golf historiography,& drop your putter one-liners we expect from Dan Jenkins. Not the outragously rich bawdy banquet of earlier works, but continuing proof that nobody can spin a hilarious, insightful, satisfying sports yarn better. BBC

Jenkins Has Lost Nothing Off the Hop on His Fastball.
By John R. Linnell
I've read them all...from Dead Solid Perfect to this one. Jenkins sometimes wavers a tad, but just between you and me, every now and then you need a Dan Jenkins novel to scrape off the crust of the politically correct climate out there and get down to the nitty gritty of life and not take things so seriously.

You either like this type of writing or you don't and clearly some on here who have reviewed this novel have their knickers in a bunch and that's OK, because if some people don't react that way, Jenkins hasn't done his job.

My only real complaint about this book is that it should have been longer. It is just too much fun reading the thinly veiled satire of the PGA Tour as well as the LPGA Tour management. For instance, Ginger Clayton could have had a few more problems on her way to being the "franchise babe."

Jenkins still has a lot of hop on his politically incorrect fastball which is one of the reasons that I love his writing so much. Those of us who follow the tours understand where Dan is coming from. Carolyn Bivens, the current LPGA Commissioner is never mentioned by name, but she is very much the one in the book who is "off to Denmark" during the playing of an LPGA major which she has turned over to a Frenchman who has some really politically incorrect aspects of his businesses.

Well done satire is an art and Jenkins confines his to what he knows best...sports. If it is your cup of tea, hop on board. Better yet...make it a Bombay Sapphire martini with four olives and get into the spirit of the thing.

Indira: The Life of Indira Nehru Gandhi, by Katherine Frank

On the morning of October 31, 1984, as she walked through her garden, smiling, with hands raised and palms pressed together in the traditional Indian namaste greeting, Indira Nehru Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards. She died as she had lived, surrounded by men, yet isolated. It was a violent end to a life of epic drama.
Here is the first popular biography of one of the world's most influential leaders, India's third prime minister. Brought up during an era that saw the rise of Indian nationalism, Indira was raised to be what her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, called "a child of revolution" - destined to play a political role in the creation and governing of an independent India. Despite her early reluctance to embrace this role, Indira eventually presided over a huge, complex, religiously riven, and male-dominated country. She was born to a wealthy, westernized family, but she had a gift for connecting with the poor of the countryside and the urban slums, the illiterate, the dispossessed - so much so that "Indira is India" became a familiar slogan. Throughout childhood, love, marriage, imprisonment, motherhood, and a sequence of personal and family tragedies, her personal hopes and desires were continually subsumed by the historical and political imperatives of her country.
In this beautifully written book, the acclaimed biographer Katherine Frank draws on unpublished sources and more than a hundred interviews to create a rich, balanced portrait. INDIRA captures in full color the personal and political fate of the leader of the world's largest democracy - the woman who played a dominant role in the history of the twentieth century and who, when it ended, was voted Woman of the Millennium by the BBC.

Amazon.com Review
The veteran author of critically praised books about Emily Bront and Lucie Duff Gordon has written an exemplary popular biography of the powerful, controversial prime minister who indelibly shaped the world's largest democracy. Katherine Frank's solidly researched narrative is particularly good on the early years of Indira Gandhi (1917-84), cogently delineating her complex relationship with her father, nationalist hero Jawaharlal Nehru, which was intimate when they were pouring out their feelings in letters, but strained when they were actually together. We see an intelligent, strong-minded woman coming of age in a turbulent time marked by her relatives' frequent stays in prison as India struggled for freedom from Great Britain. After independence, when Nehru became prime minister, Gandhi was politically active but for many years resisted seeking power in her own right. Following the deaths of her husband (Feroze Gandhi, no relation to the Mahatma) in 1960 and Nehru in 1964, she moved into the top spot, aided by the Congress Party bosses' mistaken impression that she would be a figurehead they could manipulate. On the contrary, Frank shows Prime Minister Gandhi prompted by her deep fear of disorder toward increasingly authoritarian acts, most notoriously the state of emergency declared in 1975, when she authorized the arrest of many opposition leaders. Frank depicts Gandhi as having more faith in her personal bond with the Indian people than in the messy workings of democracy. But the religious and political divisions inflamed by her policies came home to roost in 1984, when she was assassinated by her own bodyguard, a Sikh enraged by the massacre of militant Sikhs in the Golden Temple. This sympathetic but unsparing portrait makes it clear that Gandhi was a flawed leader but evinces compassion for a woman striving with a difficult personal and political legacy. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
The most striking aspects of Frank's readable, well-wrought biography are Gandhi's sad childhood and her reluctance to enter politics. She attended upwards of seven schools in Switzerland, England and India and was often separated from her family her tubercular mother died when Indira was 19; her father and many family members were in and out of jail during the Independence Movement. Indira herself was sickly (she spent 10 months in a sanatorium in Switzerland during WWII), and, at 37, she wrote to a friend, "I am doing a tremendous amount of work these days but I have not discovered my m‚tier yet." Schoolmate Iris Murdoch remembered Gandhi as "very unhappy, very lonely, intensely worried about her father and her country and thoroughly uncertain about the future." Only after the deaths of her husband, Feroze Gandhi; her father; Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India's first leader; and Lal Bahadur Shastri, his successor, did she come into her own politically. Not a political biography, Frank's book (via letters and conversations with close confidants) comes closest to showing the human Indira who joined politics because she felt duty-bound to uphold her father's secular, inclusive vision of her homeland. Frank (A Passage to Egypt: The Life of Lucie Duff Gordon; etc.) shows that Gandhi's increasing isolation, loss of confidence and closeness to her son, Sanjay, caused her later to impose the Emergency (suspending civil liberties and jailing opponents) and play castes, religions and political groups against one another contrary to her father's ideals. But she is far less knowable in the book's second and third sections, when she becomes the paranoid, ruthless leader remembered for her despotism. 12 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. Agent, Virginia Barber. (Aug. 14)Forecast: As the first biography of the late Indian leader, this will surely receive review attention and should sell well among those interested in India and in the life of an extraordinary woman.

Riveting!
By J. Marren
I found this book to be an absolutely fascinating introduction to 20th century Indian history through the story of an absolutely fascinating woman. Indira's early years as part of the most prominent family in India post-independence were chaotic--her education was haphazard, her health very poor, her sense of security forever damaged by periodic visits to jail by her father and even once by her tubercular mother. Her life goals were confused--she longed for anonymity as those around her pushed her into the limelight. Her marriage was troubled and she had children against the advice of her doctors.
Indira's political life began in my opinion with her decision to separate from her husband and live with her father and become his "right hand woman," plus the advent of anti-biotics which cured her own TB for good. She became strong and accustomed to power, but never overcame the fear and suspicion of others and fear of disorder which so tragically played itself out in her own political career.
This book is over-sympathetic to Indira during her years in power. Taking advantage of certain constitutional provisions which thank god have no equivalent in the US, she systematically dismantled local governments which were the backbone of this country that is fractured by ethnic and religious conflict. She surrounded herself with loyal but not very wise men, and as the older generation of politicians retired from public life, a new generation of leadership failed to emerge in the corrupt, authoritarian atmosphere she created. She allowed her son Sanjay to roam uncontrolled and sat by as he knocked off enemies, took enormous bribes and payoffs, and perpetrated some of the worst injustices of the Emergency. She was voted out of office in 1977 but amazingly voted back in in 1980, in part because her years in power had allowed her to keep the opposition weak, disorganized and divided.
In fairness Indira was faced with intractable problems--conflict in Assam, Sri Lanka and Kashmir, war with Pakistan, unimaginable poverty, illiteracy, Muslim-Hindu strife, the caste system and the tragedy of untouchability, drought and famine. Unfortunately her reaction to these was to eliminate opposition and protect her own position, and in later years do nothing as she was overwhelmed by paranoia and a clear sense of her own imminent assasination.
And yet the people loved her. On a recent visit to India I visited Gandhi's house and the garden where he was assinated--it was peaceful and uncrowded. Meanwhile long lines awaited those seeking admission to the garden where Indira was killed and her memorial. She styled herself "Mother India," and was idolized by the poor. She spoke to their needs but tragically did little to help them.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Indira, or those looking to gain some understanding of the modern history of India.

A must reading!!
By Pramit Ghosh
A fantastic piece of journalism!! A very well written account of one of India's greatest leaders. I have not lived long enough to testify to the truth of everything that is written (my parents could!!) but from what I know of Indian history, and from what I have seen around me, a very accurate potrayal of perhaps India's most charismatic prime minister. The book really charts her rise, fall and re-emergence on the political scene, delves into the feelings behind her every action. I had always wanted more about Indira Gandhi than what was available in the papers and magazines and this book tells me all that I wanted to know. Perhaps the only place where it is lacking is that Ms.Frank deals with the last 2 yrs of her life in very few pages. Perhaps more detail was warranted there, but her early life, her relationships with her husband, Feroze Gandhi, and her father, Nehru, are vividly potrayed and it is these parts, and the story of her rise to power, which makes this book a masterpiece. In my opinion, every Indian, and anyone who is interested in Indian history, should read this book. Better still, buy it!!

Ending the fear of life
By M. Craig Willy
Indira Ghandi was the prime minister of India from the 1960s and 1980s. She is the daughter of India's first PM, Nehru, and was raised in part by Mahatma Gandhi. Confusingly, however, she married a completely unrelated Feroze Gandhi who granted her that famous last name. This is a monster of a book at over 500 pages, copiously annotated and extremely detailed.

The most striking thing I found reading the book was how weak and non-existent Indira seems in her youth and early adulthood. She is unendingly ill with pulmonary diseases, painfully thin, does poorly at school, and floats around Europe and India with her family (she attended the world's first international school, l'Ecole Internationale, in Switzerland for League of Nations brats). She has no normal childhood or youth as the whole Nehru family is deeply involved in the Indian independence movement. They all periodically have to face jail time (a veritable rite-of-passage) for their activities, which the British government calls seditious.

She marries an ambitious, hot-headed and energetic Feroze Gandhi in 1942 despite the misgivings of her father Nehru. Though they were sincerely in love and they produced two sons, the marriage proved a miserable one. Indira was more committed to her father's political work (who becomes PM of independent India) than her husband (who quickly begins having a number of a more-or-less open affairs). I was struck by how Indira lives for others, she has no independent personality, not until in 1959, at age *fourty-two*, she deems that she has repaid her debt to her family and must live her own life. Tragically good timing, because both her husband Feroze and her father Nehru would die within the next few years.

Then Indira comes into her own, she drifts into the prime ministership in 1966 as the previous once dies. She quickly personalises politics massively: she avoids the party organization her father had created and appeals directly to the people with populist programs such as bank nationalizations and removal of aristocratic privileges. She is massively re-elected in 1967 despite a vast coalition against her running on the motto "Remove Indira". She skillfully responded with the motto "Remove Poverty". As the situation in Bangladesh (then a part of Pakistan, though 1,200 km away) degenerated into genocide as the the West Pakistani military elite reasserted its rule in the country in 1971, Indira acted decisively to attract international attention. She eventually fought a brief 2 week war, short and successful, to liberate the country. She became massively popular earning the title "Empress of India".

Though she governed over other successes, the investments of the "Green Revolution" to make India's food supply self-sufficient were finally paying off and India exploded its first atom bomb ("Smiling Buddha"), she did not fulfill her promises on poverty. By the mid-70s inflation was rising, strikes were paralyzing the economy and an anti-Indira coalition was making strong headway calling for her extra-constitutional overthrow. Indira had already eroded much of India's democracy, weakening the constitution, politicizing the judiciary and bureaucracy, and circumventing political parties. In response she declared "the Emergency", effectively making herself dictator, censuring the press, imprisoning thousands of opponents and postponing elections... but trains ran on time and inflation fell. Indira grew increasingly isolated, relying on her corrupt and ambitious son Sanjay whose political influence grew. She eventually relented, holding elections in 1977 and losing badly.

Indira, her son Sanjay and their cronies then had to face 3 years of vengeful and badly organized trials on their misdeeds during the Emergency. They emerged basically unscathed, the very unpopular Sanjay died in 1980 just before the elections in an airplane crash which, though it devastated Indira, placed her in a perfect position to win those elections (the sympathy vote counts). Indira seems pretty aimless during her final term, unable to handle the communal violence affecting Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Harijans (also called Dalits or Untouchables, the lowest of Hindu castes), especially in Kashmir and the Sikh-populated Punjab.

In 1984 as a Sikh terrorist group had been rampaging across Punjab from their base in the Golden Temple (the holiest of Sikh holy places), she launched a military operation to retake the temple and kill the terrorists. She succeeded, with massive civilian casualties and the temple heavily desecrated. Sikhs around the country were enraged and, a month later, two of her own Sikh bodyguards shot some 30 bullets into her body at point blank range. Her other son, Ranjiv, became the new prime minister. Over the 3 days after Indira's death, some 3,000 Sikhs were killed, tens of thousands more expelled from their neighborhoods, in anti-Sikh pogroms throughout India.

Overall Indira comes across as a fairly unimpressive leader. She seems to have been very lucky to have been Nehru's daughter, not had terribly coherent ideas politically and been very dangerous to India's democratic politics. However, she had the ability to really connect with the common Indian and like de Gaulle, another leader with extra-constitutional and authoritarian tendencies, ultimately favored a return to democracy and could not govern without the approval of "the nation".

In the book, Indira and her family appear very flawed but touchingly human, especially as a youth: they have petty disputes and feuds, she reads voraciously, complains of at the size of her nose and the darkness of her skin, she has few friends and her life is distinctly unordered. One word of warning she spoke to a son I thought particularly poignant: "There are millions of people in the world but most of them just drift along, afraid of death, and even more afraid of life."

First Day on a Strange New Planet, by Dan Yaccarino

Author interview included. Blast Off Boy is headed to the planet Meep as an exchange student. And on his way to Earth is Blorp Glorp, a little green alien boy. Blast Off Boy isn't too happy about the whole thing. Blorp is excited. But on their first day at each other's school, nothing goes the way they planned. On the bus, Blast Off Boy sits next to a kid with two heads. Gross. Later in the day, he gets swallowed by the purple ooze lunch special, which he was supposed to eat. In chemistry class on planet Earth, Blorp drinks a mixture that makes him grow as high as the ceiling. Too bad he gets a week of detention. Children will delight in the comic adventures of these two well-meaning misfits. Author Dan Yaccarino was inspired to write this story based on his own experience starting a new school at age 10. Narrator L.J. Ganser voices the bewilderment of being transplanted to a strange setting while capturing each zany calamity.

Adventures in Planet Swapping
By KT Toby
Even before the title page, the difference between interplanetary exchange students Blast Off Boy and Blorp is clear. In this clever, early chapter story, Earthling Blast Off Boy is having a hard time coping, while his extraterrestrial counterpart is reveling in the experience of life on another planet. Faced with typical outsider obstacles, Blast Off Boy cringes while Blorp takes everything in stride. Students tackling their first day in a new environment will relate to Blast Off Boy's anxiety but hopefully take their cues from Blorp's positive attitude and willingness to roll with the punches.
The story's simplicity is enhanced by bold illustrations bound to engage the emerging reader. While Blast Off Boy is the antithesis of an action hero, his situation is fraught with peril lending suspense to the storyline. Blorp is indomitable. His enthusiasm for new experience, despite some daunting setbacks, is infectious. The juxtaposition of their situations and attitude makes for lively storytelling.

A History of Management Thought, by Morgen Witzel

For the past three thousand years people have been thinking about the problems of management. This book shows how thinking about management has evolved and changed. It shows how changing social, political and technological forces have challenged people to think about management in new ways, and how management thinkers have responded. Sometimes their responses missed the mark and occasionally, great ideas about management failed to be picked up and were lost along the way. Sometimes, truly original and creative, even world-changing ideas appeared.

Following key currents in management thought from the origins of civilization to the present day, the book begins in the ancient world, when people were wrestling with the problems of organization and leadership. It continues through the Middle Ages, east and west, as people pondered on how to manage risk and think strategically, and on the role of business in society. It shows how the Industrial Revolution led to the emergence of scientific management, and how political and social events of the twentieth century shaped management thinking right up to the present day.

From the pyramids to Facebook, from military strategy to managing for sustainability, A History of Management Thought tells the fascinating story of how management thinking has changed, shifted, evolved and developed down through the centuries. Students taking classes in the history of management thought will find this text to be the perfect accompaniment to their studies and will be a captivating read for anyone else.

Review

'Writing a history of management thought is a formidable venture because it involves a span of time that dates back to the distant past. Witzel, a UK-based academic, takes the challenge head-on, providing in a relatively concise fashion an intelligent, well-argued treatise on how the discipline has evolved over the years. What strikes the reader immediately and emphatically is the wide variety of influences on the field...In all, the book is a great addition to the libraries of both business practitioners and those interested in business. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Academic, professional, and public library collections.' - R. Subramanian, Montclair State University, CHOICE

'This is a work of impressive scholarship and huge scope across time, geography and ideas. It is not just a history of thought, it is also the story of management through the ages.' - Andrew Thomson, Emeritus Professor, The Open University, UK

'Systems of management thought are central to the economic world, and how they evolved is central to our understanding of where we are now.' - Luchien Karsten, University of Groningen, The Netherlands

‘Witzel's history of management thought is exemplary… The author’s writing skills lead to a most accessible book, which will be of considerable use to both under-graduates and post-graduates, as well as to teachers of the subject and to interested practitioners.’ - Malcolm Warner, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, UK

Extremely Idealistic
By A Reader
Tends to ignore known contradictions, known weaknesses, and known pitfalls in Management Thought.

Still, this is the original book on The History of Management Thought and still holds its own in providing a concise reference to the origin and source for many of the actual values and actual beliefs in business today. Whether those values and beliefs are useful or useless is not really covered here, coverage only ensures that these values and beliefs had significant influence: early on the influence was directly on industry, later on the influence was more on academics and then indirectly through students who have been educated in various schools of thought (e.g., Mayo).

Missing is the mention of contributions by Herbert Simon and other social business philosophers whose ideas have since proven themselves quite useful.

By Dr. S. Brook Henderson
What I particularly loved about this book is that it went all the way back. It began with management in ancient civilizations, continued through management in medieval times and then, and only then, went to the Industrial Revolution as the beginning of "modern management." It discusses classical management, scientific management, management philosphies and emerging school of management thought. Then it has a fabulous timeline that begins at the beginning and goes through 1955. This book was published in 1972, so it is not the newest book on the block. However, if you're interested in how it all began, this is the book for you!

Lacking a little clarity, but still good
By Dr. Jones
This book is unique in that it offers an intellectual history of management thought, which is a much needed effort in the halls of the ivory tower. Simply stated, this book fills a void that weakens the overall quality of work done in the area. However, that said this book attempts to cover a huge range of subjects and works. As a result, the book loses focus at points and does not recover quickly. This simply means that portions of chapters lose focus and leave you wondering from where the link to next readings was generated. All in all, it is easy to read and makes a contribution. So get it, and enjoy.

Great book, you won't be disappointed.
By icart41
This book really helped put a nice finish on Lily's story. I also liked that parts of the other books were mentioned in this book. It had been awhile since I read the other books, I didn't have to try go remember what happened in the other books. Christine seamlessly tied them into this book. I think even if somone didn't read the other books they would still renjoy this one. I have read all of Christine's books and I have never been dissappointed. I love that she really writes clean books with no bad language or sexual content and they are not cheesy. I received an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Beta Reading and Story
By Jennifer Sprague
I am a beta reader for Christine and I love the fact that she takes our opinions to heart and reflects them in her writings, I think she is a really smart and impressive writer. This book helps tie up everything form the previous books and gives it a great ending and helps to complete the story. I enjoy reading Christine's books before they are published and then rereading them to see the small changes that she has made from the suggestions that were given by myself and other beta readers. Keep up the great work Christine and I hope to read more of your books in the future.

Another great read from Christine Kersey!
By Kindle Customer
I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this amazing story to read. I did purchase the first few books in this series and was immediately hooked! Christine Kersey proves once again that you can write an amazing story that will keep her readers interest without having the foul language and sex scenes that fill so many books these days. I for one can't wait to read what she writes next. Lily's story will grab you from the first chapter and you will ride the ups and downs with her until the very last word.
